We Are Family

indian-girl

Just heard about a great little NGO called The Family India, they’re doing this thing for kids on Saturday morning June 2oth at JJ Hospital between 9:30 and 12:30am to make 250 HIV affected children feel loved. The program will be a mela of activities and games. They need volunteers! The more volunteers they have the more individualized and personalized care they can give the kids.

So can you?
…volunteer for this program?
…spread the word and get family, friends and colleagues involved?
…help them plan and prepare for this event?
sponsor a part of the cost or provide gifts, snacks or toys for the kids?

If your answer to one (or hopefully ALL) of the above is a resounding YES then please get in touch they’d be most thrilled! email Chris on getchrishere@gmail.com.

ttpThis is way sweet. Last night Shiamak Davar’s electric show featuring blind and deaf children was attended by Alyque Padamsee, Shazahn Padamsee, Sharon Shazahn Padamsee, Jayant Patil Home Minister of Maharashtra, with his wife Shailaja (who got a birthday greeting in sign language no less!) Shaina NC, Viral Shah, Rupali Ganguly, Vikram Phadnis and Tarana Raja Kapoor.

Performances included The Blind Man’s Band (a band in which every member is blind) accompanied by Vijay Prakash, the critically acclaimed singer of songs like “Manmohini” from the movie Yuvraaj. Mind-blowing acts and audio visuals showcased how blind and deaf children recognize currency and people, can operate computers, travel in local trains, change platforms without any help and even has hold jobs without being able to see, hear or speak.

Celebrity performers included Riteish Deshmukh, Mallaika Arora Khan, an energetic performance by Hrishitaa Bhatt and never seen before gymnastic performance by Raj Bhasvar (the American desi who won a gold medal in the gymnastics category for the USA in the Beijing Olympics of 2009.) The real starts of the night however turned out to be students of the Helen Keller Institute proving without a shadow of a doubt that indeed they can.

Shiamak even moved the audience to tears with the heart wrenching tribute act to the film Black.

Its nice to see so much of this happening now and celebrities and just generally charged up regular folks showing their support as well. Whether it’s for the mentally handicapped, physically abused or creatively combating poverty.

P.S. I recall being captivated by an Astad Debo “Breaking Boundaries” performance with deaf students over a decade ago in Delhi. At one point they even turned the music off so you can experience the deafening silence they were grooving too. At the end when everyone got up to clap and were animatedly discussing the show in sign language I felt like I was the one with the handicap since I couldn’t understand their signs. Amazing what happens when you flip things around like that. Makes you think about how much we take for granted doesn’t it?

Becoming Twitterazzi

nokia6220cbackviewpurpleSo as you may have noticed I’ve recently discovered the wonderful world of Twitter which I confess eluded me for way longer than necessary. So now that I’ve figured it out I can bring you the juice, fresh (and with pictures) from my night outs in Mumbai thanks to my fabulous trusted 5 mega-pixel phone camera [entirely intentional Nokia plug] who knows, maybe they’ll feel like giving me an upgrade? It’s almost my birthday you know.)

Now all YOU have to do is do (as Uncle Cracker once said) is “follow me” on Twitter! You can find me here as missmalini of course; I promise you an endless supply of gossip, celebrity spotting, gig updates (for followers IN Mumbai) and wherever possible, eye-candy for boys & girls alike. Deal?

(And for those not on twitter not to worry I’ll make sure those pictures come up on missmalini the blog “old school” style as well!) so here’s what I twittered recently…

So remember the one time my camera wasn't working and I missed taking a picture of Imran Khan? *sob* I did manage to get thise one on my camera! Something Relevant ripping it up at Daddy's Windsong...

SRK-Aamir want Fair Rights on Friday Nights!

Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan

INDIA/
India Bollywood

(No. I don't think it looks like they're about to kiss you sick puppy!)

Here’s a rare sight! Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan got together in support of Bollywood producers and distributors in the ongoing multiplex row. Producers are demanding a 50-50 revenue sharing ration with multiplex owners, however multiplex owners don’t want the current ratio 40 – 48% to be changed. The meeting was attended by Yash Chopra, Mukesh Bhatt and Karan Johar (who acted as host) among many others.

SRK also voiced his opinion and explained that the awesome twosome Khans have not come for any publicity but are just asking for “fair rights for Friday nights.”

In the meantime, fresh talks between film producers and multiplexes broke down on Tuesday with no solution in sight to a month-long crisis that has stalled new Bollywood releases. Producers in the world’s most prolific movie industry are demanding a 50 percent share in box-office revenue while multiplex owners favor a performance-linked model based on a film’s budget and star power. Marketing and distribution of new Bollywood films has been suspended since the first week of April and analysts estimate multiplex revenue losses of 2.5-3 billion rupees in the first quarter. On Tuesday, the Producers and Distributors Forum said it will devise a strategy to release films in single-screen cinemas.

Forum spokesman Mukesh Bhatt said, “I feel sad at the way things ended today, but they were stuck on vital issues, which we felt we could not compromise on. We will come out with a detailed strategy on how to release films in single screens and independent theaters.” But Bhatt said there was no possibility of any new Bollywood releases before June. A spokesman for multiplexes did not respond to calls or messages. Bummer.
