End of the road for the Walkman.

rcc-446f1b557845awalkman

Eeks! The Walkman is 3 decades old this week. Last night Justin Timberlake (yes I follow him @jtimberlake) twittered in, “It’s the 30th birthday of the Walkman. The old commercial is a trip” with a link to this commercial…

Sony Sports Walkman

OMG Right? So apart from the fact that I used to own a nifty little (at the time) yellow Sony sports Walkman (which is now referred to as vintage) and had quite a respectable collection of cassette tapes this BBC Magazine experiment (to commemorate the Walkman) was hilarious and heart breaking all at the same time. They gave a 13 year old boy a Walkman to play with for a week. Here’s what he thought.

Down the line I wonder what’s going to make the iPod Nano or the iPhone look bad (and secretly I can’t wait!)

The Bandra-Worli Sea Link!

seaklink1

sealink2

Its finally happened! They finally finished the Bandra-Worli sea link in Mumbai! I haven’t been on it yet, apparently its super packed since they aren’t charging toll for a week. Also as a friend of mine right said, “ha ha ha…. first day first show…..always a house full!” But I can’t wait for my 7 minute speed run across, this is totally going to revolutionize my social life. For now take a peak at various pictures of the bridge I found on the internet (mostly courtesy Sadanand Warty on flickr) mine to follow soon.

Of course they used A.R. Rehman’s “Jai Ho” during the 7 minute sound & light show on Monday June 29th.  Ok, so I love the song, think Rehman is a total rockstar and will willingly bounce to the Pussycat Dolls version too but come on, do we have to use it for everything we do now? I’m thinking overkill guys.

Didjya Know?

The Bandra Worli Sea Link (Marathi: वांद्रे-वरळी सागरी महामार्ग), officially known as Rajiv Gandhi Setu is an 8-lane, cable-stayed bridge with pre-stressed concrete viaduct approaches, which will link Bandra and the western suburbs of Mumbai with Worli and central Mumbai, and is the first phase of the proposed West Island Freeway system.

An engineering marvel and the first ever open Sea Bridge of its kind, the Bandra Worli Sea Link is one of the most complex and advanced construction projects in India.

The bridge was inaugurated on 30 June 2009 by Congress Chairperson Sonia Gandhi. India.

The project was initiated more than 10 years ago but it was delayed due to public interest litigation. The foundation stone was laid in 1999, by Shiv Sena head Balasaheb Thackeray.

The toll for using the bridge is currently expected to be around Rs 50 ($1)  each way trip.

Project Cost of Rs.1650 Crores i.e. Rs.16.50 Billion INR (about 330 Million US Dollar)

Rs. 9 Crore alone will be just the cost of illuminating the bridge.

Made with about 38000 KM Long Steel Ropes, 575000 tonnes of Concrete & 6000 Workers.

Will save about 1 Hour of Travel Time & 100 crores of Vehicle Operating Cost for a 7 KM distance.

An estimate of about 125000 Vehicles will be using daily.

Mumbai gets a new landmark!

Rakhi’s Reality

Rakhi Sawant

Rakhi Sawant

Hold everything. Rakhi Sawant’s Swayamvar kicks off tonight on NDTV Imagine where 16 hopefuls will try to impress the notorious Rakhi Sawant, one of them eventually winning her hand in marriage (I wonder if she’s actually going to go through with it! Bets anyone?)

I can tell already that this is going to be one of those train-wreck shows I’ll be totally addicted too, you know the kind you just can’t stop watching cos its so bad, you just have to know if it can get any worse?! Ah reality TV, what a junkie you’ve made of me.

suitors
Psst!
Rakhi was apparently really surprised to see Kanpur boy Atirek Sharma as a contestant on her swayamvar. Atirek is a close friend of Rakhi’s ex, Abhishek Awasthi, but has now severed all ties with him (or has she? maybe he’ll make a surprise wild card comeback and up the drama at some point!) Atirek, who’s been practically stalking Rakhi ever since, even put together a scrap book of pictures from her childhood as a gift for her. Obviously she was thrilled.

Could this be the Slumdog Effect?

Mallika Sherwat and Yaani

Mallika Sherwat and Yaani

Seriously I’m beginning to think this might be some kind of crazy conspiracy to blow my mind, that or Mallika Sherawat has some seriously wicked PR skills. Remember her new found friendships with Oprah Winfrey and Usher? Well guess who just became the most recent addition to that list? The 54-year-old Greek legend Yanni! How weird is that. Right?!

He dedicated his new song “Changes” to her at the “Yanni Voices” concert in Los Angeles. In front of a crowd of 7,000 music enthusiasts Yanni announced, “This one is for you Mallika.”As you can see from the video clip she was loving it and jumped up to accept the honor, despite the fact that a lot of the audience had no idea who she was (or maybe that’s why?) Granted this happens to also be the first time that Yanni has dedicated his composition to anyone. Apparently he did a solo gig for her post the concert as well!

I hear they met in LA for post-production of her forthcoming film Hisss. But they’ve also exchanged tweets on the  microblogging website Twitter. According to the sources, Yanni invited Mallika to attend his LA concert, to which coyly replied that she would, provided he dedicate a song to her. The video screens showed images of Yanni’s performance in India at the Taj Mahal in March 1997 during the performance.

Of course Mallika couldn’t stop gushing about it (and rightly so) on her Twitter page (which has the creepiest picture of her on display btw!)

Good Bye MJ; This is it.

michael-jackson-bir_797946c
I woke up this morning to an SMS that said, “Michael Jackson dead.”

I still don’t quite have the words to express the way I feel. I guess for me the worst part is that he had kinda slipped off the radar, you know? Lost a bit of the superstar appeal amidst loads of ambiguity about his questionable conduct with children, too many crude jokes at his expense and that epic concert he never got to perform at. Ugh.

I guess I feel this way about all posthumous tributes for anyone who dies, famous or not. I wish they could be around to feel the love. Maybe we should pick a day for everyone we know and celebrate them and tell them how amazing they are while they’re still alive, not just after they’re gone…

Flipping the news I heard lots of people say lots of things… He was our generations Elvis Presley. It’s true. He was shrouded in so much mystery that every rumor became a reality. Sad, but true. He made mistakes, everyone does. He had an unhappy childhood. Yes he did and perhaps therein lies the key. He said so himself once that his most honest and autobiographical song written and composed by MJ alone is “Childhood.”

He didn’t have one.

and so, spent the rest of his adult life trying to make one up. Neverland, friends (I guess his mental age), wanting to be Peter Pan doesn’t it all make sense?

All I know is that in every corner of the world people knew him and (for the most part) loved his music. His “This Is It” comeback tour was supposed to kick off next Monday, instead he’s gone and the whole world is playing his tunes in tribute. I guess in a way the magnitude of his impact, that around the world today people are playing his greatest hits is his final grand exit, an epic concert for his biggest audience. This is it.

P.S. Love this; @frankviews says MJ’s Gone Too Soon, dedicated to himself. Born to amuse, to inspire, to delight, Here one day, Gone one night…

missmalini version 2.0ye!

technicolor_2Ddream_2Dpool
So here’s the plan! I’m working on a full-scale upgrade of my blog (with lots of help from some very generous friends!) Props to Preshit, Aspi, Karan and Nowshad! This involves a little transfer time and tweaking so if I’m MIA now and again you better believe I’ll be back.

Oh btw I saw 17 Again tonight. Cute movie and OMG how cute is this boy?!

Zac Efron

Zac Efron

Didjya Know?

Birth Name: Zachary David Alexander Efron Nicknames: Zacquisha , Hollywood & Zefron

Birthdate: 18 october 1987 (yup, he’s 21!)

Pets: Two Australian Shepherds, Dreamer and Puppy, and Siamese cat, Simon

With the popularity of High School Musical (2006) he had to change his phone number after getting numerous calls from fans.

Zac’s most prized possession is his autographed baseball collection.

Met his current girlfriend, Vanessa Hudgens, during castings for High School Musical (2006) (TV). They were paired together near the end of casting to see how well they worked together.

Simon Cowell offered him a record deal but he turned it down saying, “…acting is my main priority.”

His acting idol is Johnny Depp. Is a fan of Flight of the Conchords. His favorite movie is The Goonies, 1985 (Love it!)

Was ranked #15 on Moviefone’s ‘The 25 Hottest Actors Under 25′(2008).

Personal Quotes

“If I had to hear the High School Musical (2006) (TV) songs anymore, I would have jumped off of something really tall.” [On why he chose not to do the High School Musical Tour.]

“You know what, I do not want to fall victim to partying too hard, it’s too easy and too often done. It’s out of style anyway, I think too many people have done it before me, I’m not going to. It’s uncool, yeah. I think the rebellious thing to do would to actually be successful.”

“On why he chose 17 Again: Everything else that was around was either a musical or a high school romance, you know, and this was actually the biggest risk and the biggest challenge. I can relate to playing a kid – I’ve had a first kiss, I’ve had awkward dates, I’ve had fights with my parents… But one thing I’ve never done is gotten into a fight with my teenage daughter.”

“I’m definitely not getting married. In this business, you’re either getting married or they want you to be pregnant. I’m not getting married until I’m forty. If ever.” (uh oh, sorry Vanessa, I thought he was a keeper.)

Zac Efron. He’s yummy. (Zac is such a cute boy name isn’t it?) There’s a Zac in my eldest nephew Andre’s class, he’s six and he’s going to be a total babe magnet, so is my nephew btw, luckily he doesn’t know it… yet.
P.S. His little brother (and nephew # 3 for me) Michel has a way with the ladies as well, as you can see.

Michel and Andre Nemec

Um…in case you noticed, yup; me and my sis have rhyming names. I know, don’t ask. I’ll save that for another rant!
