It rained royalty Last Thursday at the Jehangir Art Gallery as The Gaekwad Art Foundation (TGAF) hosted a special preview for an exhibition titled “A Mystical Odyssey.” A Trust set up by Princess Asha Raje Gaekwad of the Baroda Royal Family, TGAF aims to promote Indo-Nepal joint-multicultural programs by creating a platform for promising talent to be exposed on a larger scale.

The exhibition featured the art works of 4 of Nepal’s most prolific Artists – Kiran Manandhar, Uma Shankar, Dr. Seema Shah and Manish Lal Shrestha. It was inaugurated by HH Dr. Karan Singh of Kashmir.

All families hailing from Baroda, Kashmir and Nepal came together to support this initiative and so did a host of other prominent guests. Princess Asha Raje’s daughter in law Praggyshree Raje Gaekwad who played a significant role in organizing this show was accompanied by husband Yuvraj Pratap Sinh Gaekwad. Others hailing from the royal family included Yuvraj Vikramaditya Singh with daughter Mriganka and Mr.  & Mrs Jitendra Gaekwad,
Other guests included Laxman Shreshtha, Simon Tata, Dino Morea, Haseena Jethmalani, Renu Chainani, Penny and Sanjeev Patel, Kelly Dorjee, Arti and Rahul Raichand, Nisha Jamwal and Riyad Kundanmal and Parvez Damania.

*As Adit noticed, yup Dino and Kelly in the same room, no word on their interaction but I’m guessing in the presence of royalty even cold wars cool off!

Didjya Know?
Apart from being chivalrous warriors and able administrators, the Gaekwad dynasty of 15 kings popularly known as “Gurjar Naresh” ruled over Gujarat for almost 3 centuries, and pioneered the proliferation of different Arts symbolizing the coming of an age of peace, luxury, prosperity, enlightenment and good living.

Last week there was another high-profile ladies-only luncheon (along the lines of the one thrown by Harpers Bazaar) at Kebab Korner, InterContinental Marine Drive to launch their new healthy menu & decor hosted by Gayatri Khanna and (in this case ladies man!) Romil Ratra (GM, InterContinental Marine Drive.)

The afternoon was a quintessential mix of food & fashion (just how the the rich and restless like it!)

GQ Bar Night. The Butler did it.

gq
So GQ’s Wednesday Bar Night at Olive is turning out to be quite the hotspot! In fact I have to say I’m pretty impressed with how they manage to pull off stylish soirees on a regular basis without ever compromising on class (this also means they always have Redbull at the open bar which I truly appreciate.) Remember the launch party? That was super hip. Plus the magazine has had my heart throb Aamir Khan on the cover (with a pretty well crafted interview inside) and their first bar night was a roaring success. (Maxim eat your heart out. Although I had a conversation with Alex Kuruvilla yesterday and he pointed out that there was actually no magazine (in the same league)  that really compares, I guess that’s fair. Its also true that guys actually read this stuff (when they’re not flipping through Cosmo that is) so they’re clearly on to something.

So here’s my LPC action from the night (Press kit photos to follow…)

In a blur of heat (and the distinct aroma of horses) I spotted Gerard Butler (remember I told you he was in town?)  While the boys commented (with some degree of satisfaction) that “he really isn’t as jacked as he looks in 300″ he spent most of his night getting oodles of attention from members of the female persuasion (and clearly loving every minute of it.) Tarana Raja Kapoor had a funny exchange with him about having dubbed for the Queen in the Hindi version of 300 to which he replied with a snarky “So how was I in bed in the Hindi version?” Another popular face at the party turned out to be good ‘ol Shantaram Gregory David Roberts who flashed me a friendly smile unlike the slightly grumpier Mr. Butler! Amrit Maghera pulled of the whole “barbie” ensemble with a straight face and managed her first Hollywood scoop for After Hours with a satisfied grin on her face, (Nina Manuel’s stilettos can’t have been easy to fill!) Meanwhile Narendra Kumar Ahmed looked like he’s been working out although he kept joking with me that he was just holding his stomach in. (Man if you could teach some of us girls to do that we’d never work out!) Uday Benegal also appeared out of nowhere much to the delight of some long time fans and friends and Bandana Tewari zipped around with the kind of dynamite energy I’m praying to God I still possess post parenthood!

P.S. This what the buzz over at www.gerardbutlergals.com is… to surmise: they love him in white and they really want him back!

And Now Say Hello to My Monochromatic Friend!

Same colors, same party but sadly getting it SO wrong.

Not like I was saving the best for last but just when you thought (based on his relatively normal attire at the last GQ bar night) that Yash Birla had finally retired his futuristic wardrobe and any moment now was gonna do a big fat “gotcha!” on the paparazzi (who remain mystified but trigger happy) perhaps even admitting that he had been kidding all along he shows up in this psychadelic tee shirt which could possible be the ugliest shirt in the world. Challengers?

Honorable mention in the fugly department goes to this dress and that belt. (I’m not a fan but I’ll let the experts decide. Ladies?)

Fashion Week Day 4: Manish Malhotra

2667_79276970498_542990498_2867014_1845991_n

Last night I made the rookie mistake of lingering a tad too long in the sponsor lounge and ended up having to watch the show from in there since the crowd for Manish Malhotra’s shindig was swelling way past seating capacity. I’ll get to the show in a second but I assure you there’s always loads of entertainment lingering in the hallway if you keep your eyes open!

Kim Jagtiani (sporting a shock of purple hair) was catching up with Shehnaz Treasurywala, Divya Mohta (carried off a funky combination of accessories with style, I guess it helps if you design them) Anaita Shroff Adajania looked comfy but classy in a flowy white dress, Narendra Kumar looked pretty pleased with how his men’s show had gone, live band and all. He was telling me how the guys looked really spiffy like you’ve never seen them before, bow ties, tuxedo’s and jeans. (I have to agree, mostly male models end up looking like a bit of a caricature of themselves in the outfits they’re given but Nari appears to have rectified that for at least one show.) Bandana Tewari was racing around happily and when I asked her how she manages to do it considering it was now day 4 of non-stop activity (and late night partying) she laughed, “This is nothing darling, I’ve just done Paris, Milan and London Fashion Week.” (And all this without Redbull? How?) Then of course I spotted a familiar face and was just about to do the obligatory “Hey, how’ve you been?’ *kiss* *Kiss* when a friend of mine reminded me why he looked  so familiar. Ali holds the distinction of being the only male stripper in Mumbai who bachelorette after bachelorette has had the (somewhat queasy) pleasure of witnessing perform. But I guess we have to give him props for holding the monopoly in the biz.

peek-a-boo!

peek-a-boo!

The buzz about Shah Rukh Khan arriving, getting his make up done, and that the show wouldn’t start for another half hour made the rounds and then suddenly there was music as the first of the golden girls strutted down the stage. Manish Malhotra’s design skills are unquestionable however the show seemed awfully short for all the hoopla around it. The camera crews were torn between panning up the model’s endless legs to micro mini gold boy shorts and focusing on a dishy front bench made up of Gauri Khan, Kajol & Tanisha Mukherjee, Hrithik & Susan Roshan, Karan Johar, Arjun & Meher Rampal, Tusshar Kapoor, Sophie Chaudry, Ritesh Deshmukh, Raveena Tandon and Sridevi & Boney Kapoor. Shah Rukh made an appearance in a black and gold ensemble with a matching sling for his recovering shoulder and proceeded to do a 5 minute stand up act. There’s no denying the fact that he could pretty much do anything at all and still steal the show. A few inside jokes with his celebrity bench followed by a global diss on all male models “I hope Gauri still respects me in the morning” and he was whisked off to the after party where there was a VVIP section within the VIP section and a some excellent strawberry martinis.

Tushar Kapoor

Karan Johar

Karan Johar

I felt mildly bad for Tusshar Kapoor who seemed lost puppy like as the last celebrity standing when SRK and his entourage slipped out. (I’m not sure how Sophie ended up part of that pack.) I’m guessing there was an after party to the after party we’ll never see pictures of. Kjo meanwhile seemed absolutely comfortable hanging out but perhaps there is more under the surface than meets the eye since Hrithik Roshan appears to have dethroned him as Shah Rukh Khan’s current BBF.

Mrinmoy

Mrinmoy

Honorable mention to the paparazzi who do this night after night hoping to capture that money shot. I also met the charming Mrinmoy who runs a fantastic deli called Table of Contents in Khar, Mumbai.

Oh and here’s yet more proof that male models deserve all the Zoolander flack they get. These boys (one in a wife beater) seriously thought I was taking their picture because I’m a fan.

And yet somehow the guy in the Ed Hardy gear seems even further down the food chain. (Can someone please explain to me what the obsession is?) The only explanation that comes to my mind is that perhaps they got it free and its shiny so hey why not? But who gets dressed up thinking I look really hot in these gold shorts, pimp hat and kolhapuri chappals, all I need is to do is pop the collar on my Ed Hardy tee shirt to finish me off!

P.S. I was told by an ardent follower that perhaps I’m not bitchy enough, I’m trying to keep it within reason and avoid flaming for the sake of it but I hope you enoyed the meow factor in the post 🙂

GQ Bar Nights kicked off its maiden voyage with panache last night at Olive. The place was abuzz with mostly beautiful people, plenty of trendy cocktails and loads of food on the house (now I’ve been pretty dissappointed with the food at Olive in the past but last night’s spread was quite impressive.) AD and Sabina Singh played host to the rich and restless in attendance including  Bandana Tewari (in her animal print dress), Sophie Choudhary, Natasha Poonawalla, Divya Thakur and Haseena Jethmalani (all flying solo), Roohi & Chetan Jaikishen, Yash & Avanti Birla (in surprisingly sedate garb), Zeba & Rajesh Kohli, Pratima & Gaurav Bhatia, Samir & Palak Sheth, Ashwin Deo, Alex Kuruvilla and Gautam Singhania. DJ Aaron James from New York turned up the tempo accompanied by a live percussionist and kept the likes of Fahad Samar, Nisha Jamval, Kishen Mulchandani, Rosa Catalona and Sangita Kathiwada entertained till the wee hours of the morning.

You must fall between the ages of 18 to 25 years and entries will be accepted till midnight on 15th March, 2009. All applicants must be citizens of India and no previously published works will be admitted for consideration. The winner and runner up will be announced in the June issue of the magazine and apart from being published in Vogue will receive a special six-week training programme along with a cash prize of 30,000rs (the runner-up gets 5,000rs.)
