Friday Night Full Tight*

*Friday Night Full Tight loosely translates to “got wrecked” in America speak.

Friday night turned out to be quite an epic evening (by which I mean we eventually ended up at Bling.) Starting off with an entertaining stand up act called “Around the World in 80 minutes” by Jonathan Atherton who does a fair amount of cultural mimickery amid his mostly self-effacing humor. (I find Mumbai laughs loud and easily at most stand up comics. We’re good like that.) The only slightly uncomfortable silence during the show was when he (rather seriously) mentioned that abused women make better lovers. Followed by no punchline. Er… Spotted Lara Dutta, Rajat Kapoor, Anubhav Pal and Rahul Da Cunha all in for the gig as well.

After the show we all headed over to Zenzi for drinks where I ran into a very pretty Juhi Pande and an equally friendly Abhay Deol. It’s impossible to dislike anyone with dimples I feel. He was really sweet about posing for these pictures and (as is my fate) must have assumed I was a fan. I kinda am now.

So we ended up going from Zenzi to Shiro to Oba to Polly to Bling (where after they shut for the general public I think they reopened for Sohail Khan and crew.) Luckily this time we made it home before dawn and woke up the next afternoon and went straight to Salt Water Cafe for lunch. Yum. As we were leaving we spotted this heavily guarded ride. Wonder who’s it is. Anyone?

Mumbai’s nightlife goes into pre-monsoon overdrive!

So now that I’m all caught up on my blog let me just tell you what an amazingly hectic weekend I’ve had! Friday night: Cafe Goa, Poison, after-party @ Ken’s. Saturday: (Hard Rock Cafe for lunch, Aroma Thai for foot massage) Zenzi Mills, China House, Bling, 7am breakfast buffet @ Leela Kempinski (again!)

leela
For some reason Saturday night in Mumbai was just a little extra rocking. In fact everywhere we went was PACKED beyond belief. I even asked some of the club owners if they knew why. Jehan from Blue Frog explained that the 905 people that showed up were on account of French trance DJ Neuromotor who flew down especially for DJ Asad’s birthday (who played the opening set) what a cool birthday prezzie eh? We unfortunately never made it in the line outside looked a little too daunting! Matan Schabracq who’s new branch of Zenzi next to Blue Frog dubbed “Zenzi Mills” joked, “I think it’s because they heard I’m in town again!” (love him!)  and then went on to explain, “No seriously… I have no idea. Maybe because its almost raining and people are gonna be stuck at home then?” Point. Rishi Acharya who’s new club Oba (which has and I repeat; the best hip hop DJ ever) said, “Place was rocking, the whole older social lot were there for dinner and then in the lounge for drinks. Suresh & Meena Raheja, Sidharth Bhandari, Suzie & Deepak Mirchandani and even Upen Patel.”

P.S. I briefly saw a slightly scruffy-cute looking Kelly Dorji at China House (amid the constant stream of people walking up and down (why do they do that?) perhaps not having bothered to shave since ex girlfriend Lara Dutta and ex best friend and Lara’s new boyfriend Dino Morea are still in Macau) and later at Bling last night Naved Jaffery (was wandering around, not really getting noticed but now that I know he was at the opening of the new Indo Afro restaurant earlier that night, the waistcoat makes more sense) Sohail Khan walked in past 2am (flanked by groupies and bodyguards) and Gautam Singhania was the last to leave. Well maybe technically we were, but I saw Rishi Acharya enjoying the Leela breakfast buffet just like us, what a spread and for 800rs  ($17) what a steal! Tonight I had every intention of attending as Chef Max unfurled his monsoon menu at Olive, Bandra (and as I mentioned A.D. and Sabina Singh played host come rain or shine) but I’m just too partied out! As Garfield once wisely said; “The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak!” Tomorrow night I’m on air on 94.3 Radio One with Twitter Tunes, my buddy Chetan’s cricket commentary and live Tarot readings with Lara Shah so tune in, we’ll party. This Wednesday Shamita Singha is hosting the launch of another Sobo (i.e. South Mumbai for the uninitiated) lounge and Something Relevant are playing are Blue Frog (Yesssss!) I’ll be there and not be square.

The Weekend Windup…

I had a super fun weekend… First at the MySpace gig (where Black, Scribe and Mother Jane ripped it up at the Secret Show, particularly Scribe man, can that boy – Vishwesh – growl.) Although I have to confess that isn’t really my sort of music (if you can even call it music, I know I sound like my mother I apologies but it’s true.) Clearly however the teen headbangers were loving it. They even managed to create their own little mosh pit and started doing that somewhat violent “dance” which involves ramming into each other on the floor. Eeks.

Nevil

Meanwhile a lot of my friends had been jet-setting around from Jaipur to Nepal so we had a sort-of reunion at Bonobo on Friday. Nevil Timbadia, who runs it is actually one of the most chilled out guys I know and as a result the whole place has his very chilled-out vibe. I highly recommend a visit the next time you’re in Bandra, Mumbai. You can choose between the air-conditioned inside and the tropical-feel outside (where you can also smoke; I’m just saying.)

Unexpectedly it turned out to be on of those nights where nobody wanted to go home so we hit China House and Bling, finishing up around 7am at the Leela coffee shop and taking the rickshaw ride of shame home just as Mumbai was waking up (completely oblivious to our night of debauchery!) Of course Saturday was a total right-off (apart from a heavenly foot massage at Aroma Thai.)

Oh. My. God. Have you been there? I confess I may have been hesitating about sharing my brilliant find for fear it might get too crowded but you just have to know about this. Harpreet Baweja, a 27-year-old NRI from Thailand has imported a foot spa experience like no other and you can enjoy 60 minutes of utter bliss aka the Sawadee which will cost you approximately 700rs ($14 amazing right?!) from the comfort of a lazy-boy as a skilled therapist gives you the best foot rub you’ll ever have. I don’t know what it is about this place but everyone who’s ever been has wanted to go back. Trust me and try it. [There’s one in Khar #022 6056872 and one in town, Mahalaxmi: #022 3536601.] Yes I have both numbers. It’s that good.

Birthday celebrations which began on Tuesday finally wrapped on Sunday (I guess I’m going with the non-traditional approach of the older I get the more I party!) with a fab double birthday brunch, my buddy Navraj is a fellow Gemini so we decided to join forces at East (the Pan Asian restaurant at Kemps Corner, Mumbai I’m constantly raving about.) Nachiket Sheyte who’s been a Sous Chef at Nobu in NYC (yup he’s the bomb) is totally hands on and serves up a delightful range of Pan-Asian cusine. Apart from all my usual peeps some of my favorite pretty girls showed up including Reshma Bombaywala (who has a secret I can’t tell you yet!), Juhi Pande and Bruna Abdulla (who’s back from doing all sorts of crazy dares on India’s version of Fear Factor.) What a blast. We played beer pong (which Sunny Sara who runs Redlight had major beginners luck with), tried an extremely yummy selection of fruity shots thanks to the “shot-queen” (which for once wasn’t me) and ended up stumbling home at 7pm and totally crashing out. Wicked fun.

U2
P.S. Can you tell who’s excited about the U2 360 tour across Europe this fall? Now that I’ve spent all my money on tickets to the FIFA World Cup 2010 in South Africa I’m going to lay low for this one, I’m still hanging onto the hope that one day Bono will come to Mumbai for an epic concert. After the Slumdog became a Millionaire anything’s possible right?!

Club Culture and an Aurus Flashback

So last night I did the 5am hop till you drop starting at Aurus which ending at High Lounge (via Bling.) If you’ve never ventured Northward to party like no one has partied before boy are you missing out. I cannot explain how packed Aurus was and the pretty girls (forget guys!) queued up outside hoping to be let in even past 1am was pretty crazy. What is it about Aurus that makes it such a hotbed of the young and restless I wonder? I suppose I’ll have to go back tonight and find out. 🙂

I do recall though way back at the launch of FHM magazine I popped into Aurus at approximately 3am and clocked this for my Mid Day column on October 20th 2007…

Shah Rukh Khan

At the FHM party at Aurus the very last to leave were Shah Rukh & Gauri Khan, Karan Johar (who spent a fair amount of time with Yash Birla), Anaita & Homi Adhajania, Manish Malhotra and Vivek Oberoi in a brown beanie trying desperately to play with the big boys.

I also distinctly recall my “celebrity oops” moment that night was whispering to my non-Indian friends “…that’s Gauri Khan! Shah Rukh Khan’s wife!” and them replying, “You mean the chick standing next to Shah Rukh Khan?” and I flipped around just in time to catch a glimpse of the back of his pony tailed head as he left the building.

Poison VIP

Tomorrow night pretty much everybody who’s anybody is hoping to score an invitation to DJ Aqeel’s grand re-opening of Mumbai’s hot spot Poison (Bandra). Watch this space for the ‘lo down on how the swanky soiree went… P.S. Bumped into Aqeel at Bling last weekend and he’s looking super hot! He’s been laying low and apparently covered in sawdust on location pretty much all last month so this should be good!
