Welcome Valhalla!

install4_1

So as promised I checked out Valhalla last night. The first thing I have to say is, what a step up from Starters & More?! Now don’t get me wrong, I have loads of happy pub-hopping memories from there (one which involved a yeager bomb and another on a fateful night where my very lovely (albeit slightly hyper) jive-partner spun me around so hard that I lost my balance and nearly cracked my skull open on the step leading up to the bar! (He later bought me a helmet as a joke!) Good times.

Anyway Valhalla has several things going for it:

1. South Mumbai has very few lounges to speak of. This could be the new Henry Thams perfectly located at Eros, Churchgate
2. There’s an upstairs, outside smoking section where you can take your drinks (woohoo!)
3. The bartenders are friendly and the tapas is yummilicious (especially those little pieces of pineapple wrapped in ham. I’d like some more please!)
4. Also the open bar party hosted by Shamita Singha had Redbull which is always a good thing.

So Lets take a moment and talk about this throne. It kinda feels like that elephant in the room (that everybody wants to ride!) Almost every member of the glitterati gave it whirl (and a pose) for paparazzi and friends while others lounged, chatted, giggled, gossiped and guzzled.

I’ll get the whole PR set of pix in a while but here are mine. I missed Kelly Dorji because he was too busy taking a picture of Manasi Scott on that chair! (Love her hair by the way.)

So the usual suspects (as I Twittered) were Ash Chandler & Junelia Aguira, Shveta Salve, Kelly Dorji, Manasi Scott, sister act Mashoom & Shamita Singha,TC & Nathalie Ressencourt De Sousa (who are hosting singles night at Cafe Goa tonight incidentally), Kim Jagtiani (who had just come from a gig, hence the hat), Anurag Kashyup, Delna Poonawala, Nisha & Adam Bedi, Candice Pinto, Abhishek Kapoor, Apeksha & Sumeet Chopra (happy mommy-to-be) Arshiya Eappen and Amrit Maghera doing her After Hours deal.

So would you believe Apeksha Chopra (with a body like that) as TWO children?! Also had a fun chat with Nisha Harale Bedi on the smoking terrace (she’s so fun btw and complimented me for being ballsy on my blog heehee) she revealed that at her beach wedding Goa Candice Pinto caught the bouquet (even though Aanchal Kumar was vying for it!) Candice also confessed that she didn’t know about the white wedding dress code so showed up in rainbow hues and was super embarrassed!

Yesterday evening Monica Shah & Karishma Swali of JADE hosted a little champagne soiree to announce the arrival of their boutique on Peddar Road, Mumbai (although I feel like I’ve seen it around for a while so didn’t realise it was new) and smiled most in the presence of significant celebrity (in this case Twinkle Khanna.) On offer – a summer collection of gossamer flowy chiffon dresses,  tops,  spring jackets and a range of separates in pastels and nude with “refined detailing and construction.” Deepti Gujral and Candice Pinto posed and preened in elegant bridal wear (they seemed grumpy but gorgeous.)

The glitterati showed up in support (in fact many of them in JADE designs, kinda gaurantees press coverage you know.) Spotted: (monochromatic and matching) Aarti Surendranath, Bijal Meswani, Superna Motwane, Amrit Maghera, Farida Udhas (wife of Pankaj Udhas) walked in with her daughter, Pinky Reddy, Gayatri Ruia, Namrata Barauh with husband Vikram Shroff, Radhika Ruia (wearing JADE creation), Bonita Bulchandani (wearing JADE creation), Anju Taraporewalla (wearing JADE creation), Ninotchka Nagpal (wearing JADE creation) and Shibani Suri. The first wives club Sonali Bendre, Twinkle Khanna and Gayatri Joshi (wearing JADE creation) made an appearance too. Avanti Birla stuck to a sober asymmetric tailored black dress with a (refreshingly) matching silver evening bag and pointy shoes. Rashmi Uday Singh on the other hand was in fiery orange buttoned down shirt complete with dhoti pants and floral clutch and Akansha Agarwal wore an animal print. I also spotted this printed kurta-dress in the crowd which I thought was fabulous…

When I inquired if the economic slowdown had promoted them to drop their prices, Karishma smiled and said, “No, that would go against our philosophy.” (Ah, clever philosophy.)

The Jade collection encompasses the Jade Couture, Bridal and Diffusion Line (again cool names.) I have to confess (and this may be because I don’t know a whole lot about fashion) that to me most of the western wear seemed an awful lot like the clothes you get at ZARA, only just blinged up (I think that’s what they mean by “refined detailing.”) I really liked the bridal wear though (somehow you can never bling that stuff up enough) especially this size zero mesh blouse with the tattoo to match (a great comment on how far the Indian bride really has come, dontchya think?)

On Friday evening at NCPA, Mumbai S.P.J. Sadhana School Celebrated 35 years of successfully bringing life and joy to the lives of some very special children. Students of the Visual Arts & Crafts Department in the fourth year of their course, showcased the extraordinary skills of the mentally challenged and painstaking dedication to creating a visual extravaganza designed and conceptualized by fashion guru Hemant Trevedi and the Sheetal Design Studio. (Hemant has been associated with the school for more than a decade and has orchestrated two successful fashion events, “The Awakening” (1999) and “I M Possible” (2004) for the school.)

I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything like it and I’m struggling to find the right words to express what an absolutely brilliant experience this was.

The evening showcased 8 thematic sequences on the ramp and an exquisite performance by the unique dance troupe Nritarutya.  In addition Aruna Raje, a critically acclaimed film maker showcased her stirring film on the lives of these students as they put their hearts and souls into the project aptly titled “Because … I am.”

Dr. Radhike Khanna, the charming and unassuming Vice Principal of S.P.J. Sadhana School, spent the evening in the front row cheering and clapping for all her students who immediately flung her a flying kisses full of unadultrated love. At this point Juhi Chawla burst into tears and I know exactly how she felt.

Models like Deepti Gujral, Parvathy Omnakuttan, Mashoom and Shamita Singha, Candice Pinto, Kavita Karayat, Sucheta Sharma, Mridula Chanrashekar and Amit Gauhar sashayed in the stylish emslebles with  with hand painted florals, hand made jewellery in clay and beads along with the students who worked on the project.  The host Rakshandha Khan was her enegmatic self and enjoyed a little play-fighting with the show stopper Mona Singh.

Others who lent their support to this wonderful cause included Shobha De, Kunal Kohli, Haseena Jethmalani, Reema Jain, artist Brinda Miller, actress Madhu, Pankaj Udhas with wife & daughter, Anup Jalota, Queenie Dhody, Anita Dhongre, Sangeetha Kathiawad, Chhaya Momaya, Hemu & Naz Jhaveri, Bijal Meswani, Kedar Gawde of Celebrity and Manini De.

Dr. Radhike Khanna put it so well when she said, “Art is the finest way of doing anything.  Education that focuses on challenging the creative mental processes of an individual, results in the transformation of the human spirit. We are very happy and excited that our children have got this opportunity to display their unique talent. We were very thrilled with Hemant being such an integral part of our event “Because …. I am” which recognizes that our students are alive individuals with their own identity, complete and unique personalities.”

The students used the skills and techniques they’ve learnt in their course like brush strokes, stenciling, spray painting, paper quilling, beadwork, embroidery and silk painting to create high quality fashion wear. As witnessed in the film the concentration and focus with which they work helped them overcome their disabilities to become the young, talented and fresh designers of the Visual Arts Ramp.

I especially loved the pieces evoking imagary from aincient civilizations like Mohinjodaro and the very trendy zodiac inspired baby tees.

Now here’s where you come in the collection with be available for sale at both SDS Design Studio and SPJ Sadhana and the proceeds will go to the school.
The clothes are exquisit and children are so worth it.
