IIFA goes Bling Bling!

Apart from film, fashion was on the menu at IIFA this weekend. Designer Manav Gangwani and jewelery designer Farah Khan Aqeel showed their latest collections at the IIFA fashion show held in Macau on Friday night.

Diya Mirza, Dino Morea and Manav

Manav Gangwani’s collection “Serenity” was themed in white, green and gold. The show stoppers for Manav Gangwani were Madhavan, Dia Mirza and Dino Morea. (Dia Mirza in a heavily embroidered, lehenga sparkling with Swarovski crystals, teamed with a matching corset with jewelery by Farah Khan. Dino in an ivory sherwani appliqued with ivory velvet and further accented with Swarovski crystals and beads. Madhavan wore gold lame sherwani, artistically embroidered, once again accented with Swarovski crystals and  bead work.

Hrithik and Susane Roshan

Sussane wore an emerald necklace with Columbian pear shape emeralds and diamonds. For Hrithik, Farah designed a pendant suspended on a black chord in the form of a soaring falcon, “I envision seeing him like that so that’s why I designed this specially keeping him in mind.”

Much of the glitterati including Zayed Khan, Sophie Choudry (much prefer her pink dress, too much cleavage for comfort in the white one n’est pas HHC?), Raveena Tandon, Lara Dutta, Dia Mirza (skinny legs and all), Malaika Khan, Sussane Roshan, Mugdha Godse, Neil Nitin Mukesh, Anil Thadani, Madhur Bhandarkar made bold and bling statements in couture creations by Manav Gangwani and jewelry by Farah Khan at the IIFA Awards this weekend. (The designers in turn got the best possible piggy back ride down the red carpet!) Even Peter Andre adorned the desi dude look (I wonder where THAT random 6 degrees connect happened but go Slumdog nevertheless!) he showed up in a sherwani, funky embroidered canvas kicks and a bejeweled Peacock brooch all.

Even Farah Khan walked the red carpet in a dress by Manav Gangwani. While Priyanka Chopra, Bipasha Basu and Kangana Ranaut wore her precious jewelery.

FYI if you’re wondering what the filmy factor is. Farah Khan Ali (married to Aqeel Ali aka DJ Aqeel) is big sis to Sussanne Roshan (wife of Bollywood actor Hrithik Roshan) and Zayed Khan (married to Malaika Khan) so bling runs in the family!

Farah says, ” My designs are flamboyant, ornate and adventurous. I believe jewelery should make you feel like a princess when you wear it, no matter how big or small the piece of jewelery is, it should be eye catching and make the wearer feel special.”

(I guess it makes total sense now why Farah Khan’s doting hubby, DJ Aqeel Ali’s rocking night club at the Leela Kempinski, Mumbai is called Bling right?!)

Celebrities spotted wearing Manav Gangwani creations and Farah Khans jewellery on the red carpet  were  Sussane Roshan in a Swarovski embellished drape gown, Malaika Zayed Khan in an ombre green, black sari teamed with a fluted blouse, Raveena Tandon in a  red sari with swarovski embellished blouse, Mughda Godse royal blue gown. Also Neil Nitin Mukesh in a black suit with royal blue waistcoat, with hubby Anil Thadani in a grey suit with a red shirt, Madhur Bhandarkar in a black suit with navy shirt,
Farah Khan also wore a  black gown by Manav Gangwani.

Zayed Khan and Sophie Choudhury hosted the show were also dressed in Manav Gangwani. Sophie wore jewelelry by Farah Khan.

Serenity by Manav Gangwani

Despite its subtlety it is still extremely striking. A great mix of the Feminine and the Contemporary. Manav Gangwani will make you re-think your stand on “Couture Clothing”. Clothes to last one a lifetime. “The entire collection tells a story and that’s how I want my clothing to be” says Manav Gangwani!!!

Colors and textures here will be Soft and Sensual. The silhouettes will reflect the Era of the Mughals…… …..and the Royal Age… Ravishingly flowing Anarkalis…..Ornate, heavily encrusted Lehengas….…… yet, the cuts stylized to be contemporary enough for the present day….. ……a unique combination of the yesteryears and today…. mesmerizing……enchanting……artfully fashioned drapes cascading gently…..flamboyant saris….. arresting bodices with appealing manuevers where least expected…..a revelation in each garment……. enthrallingly feminine….. shimmery fabrics…..sheers……chiffon shot with gold…. …….soft gauzy fabrics which are so surreal that they must captivate every woman……. filmy gossamer fabrics lightly touched with shimmering gold through this entire dreamlike collection….As though Fairy fingers had entwined the thread

a thousand trembling orbs of sparkling dew spangle the texture of this fairy loom,– So, Evanescent and Diaphanous….… heavy Brocades…..adding Lavishness beyond compare….. encrusted with swarovski crystals…

This is another riveting collection from Manav Gangwani’s endless repertoire of Creativity……… and every Design is a Masterpiece which any women will yearn to own…………..

IIFA-rget it!

forget
(Apologies for being MIA it’s been a hectic work week!) But here’s the buzz from Macau this year. Turns out a lot of celebrities will NOT be attending this years International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) Awards this year. Kareena Kapoor (after announcing that she was going to learn to belly dance from Shiamak Davar for her act) has now backed out. Instead, Bebo will accompany boyfriend Saif Ali Khan to England where they will attend the T20 World Cup matches. Farah Khan has her priorities all sorted out too. Her babies and family first, then her friends and then everybody else. Farah Khan will be given the Best Choreography award for ‘Desi Girl‘  (a track from Dostana) at IIFA this year but will not be there to receive it, instead she’ll be choreographing a song picturized on Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol for Karan Johar’s My Name is Khan.

Now this one’s particularly funny, Ranbir Kapoor had initially agreed to perform at the awards ceremony. But now is not too keen anymore. This sudden change of mind is being credited to his new look for Shimit Amin’s next  project Rocket Singh (really Rocket Singh?) Incidentally, if Ranbir had actually ended up performing, it would have been the first time he’d dance at an awards ceremony(looks like it will be a while before I see Ranbir groove to Bachna Ae Haseeno.)

And Forget about performing live, Bollywood star Akshay Kumar won’t even be attending the 10th International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) awards night in Macau on June 13. The actor has kept aside the month for a family vacation, specially chalked out with his son. I’m told the finale might be performed by the Bachchans Amitabh, Aishwarya and Abhishek (they’ve had tons of practice because of the Unforgettable Tour anyway.) I also hear Shahid Kapoor is performing. Initially Priyanka Chopra was also to perform but now she is not. Bollywood actors Boman Irani and Riteish Deshmukh, who had the audience in splits with their humor at the awards last year in Bangkok, will play hosts to the cine event again and joining the two would be beauty queen-turned-actress Lara Dutta.

Meanwhile Amrita Rao will be seen in a whole new chic avatar At IIFA’09 promoting “Shortkut” walking the ramp with co-star Arshad Warsi as a part of the special IIFA Foundation Fashion Extravaganza followed by a rapid fire Q&A round with hosts Zayed Khan and Sophie Choudhary on centre stage. There will also a special media briefing for Shortkut on the following day. The film is directed by Neeraj Vora, produced by Anil Kapoor and screenplay by Anees Bazmee. Other star cast of Shortkut includes Akshay Khanna, Arshad Warsi and a special appearance by Sanjay Dutt and the producer Anil Kapoor himself in a cameo. Amrita will be seen wearing sleek and sexy Wendell Rodricks outfit complemented by elegant jewellery by Gitanjali Group for IIFA Foundation Fashion Extravaganza. She will also be seen sporting accessories and more from international brands of the likes of Christian Dior, FCUK, Aldo, Luxottica Group.

FYI her PR says “Her look for the IIFA will showcase 2C’s – color and comfort.” Hilarious. (And seriously I couldn’t make this stuff up if I tried!)

Amrtia Rao

Amrtia Rao

Two days before the actual excitement begins, Amrita Rao says “My stint with IIFA started off in Singapore where I was awarded the “Face of the Year” Award. It is an event that is extremely close to my heart and extremely special for sentimental reasons. Macau is a unique amalgamation of Portugal and Chinese culture which I am quite fascinated by and looking forward to explore. This year besides mingling with the entire film fraternity, I will be giving undivided attention to my soon-to-be-released film, Shortkut. My fashion statement will express loads of ‘green carpet’ glamour for the night, but simple yet sexy dresses for the day.”

The Fight Club

After the very filmy spat between the show’s host Sajid Khan and best director award winner Ashutosh Gowarikar at the recent Star Screen Awards, it seems the industry has put Sajid in the dog house despite sister Farah Khan’s attempts to smooth things over on stage (which I’m not sure she did very well either…)

Subhash Ghai has gone all out by sending text messages to everyone in his phone book saying “All respected filmmakers and artistes fully support Ashutosh Gowarikar’s stand to speak on Screen awards against the cheap and humiliating jokes on industry people in public, where they are supposed to honour the contestants and the winners… it was height of making commercial awards function as a cheap entertainment show at the cost of celebrities, artistes and individuals. Industry shall stop going to attend such functions in future if such arrogance continues.”

If you’re just hearing about this,  the drama went down in Mumbai on January 14. As a co-host of the Star Screen Awards, along with his sister Farah, Sajid had been cracking jokes at the expense of several celebrities. When Ashutosh Gowarikar came on stage to accept his award, he voiced his displeasure at Sajid’s humour and also the fact that he was not allowing many award winners to give an acceptance speech. He also said that the people would rather listen to the artistes than Sajid’s jokes.

When Sajid told him that the jokes were part of the script, Ashu asked him to shut up and walked off. Not one to let things slide, Sajid put in the last word saying, “Nobody’s father can ask me to shut up”.

Now play nice boys or I’ll tell mom.
