Google on a Roll(s)

Time to revisit the Google graph and what key search words are landing them up on this blog. Gauri Khan has virtually dropped off the radar and hence been dethroned by another sort of royalty altogether (of the four-wheeled persuasion) and Priyanka Chopra has over taken Kareena Kapoor (boohoo Bebo) but if it’s any consolation she squeezes in just past Kangna Ranaut (but mostly because of a spelling confusion) and the Obamas’ new pet, the Portuguese water dog.

Didjya Know?

Shortly after this first successful test, Royce took Rolls and Johnson for a ride in his new car. It so impressed the two auto entrepreneurs that in March of 1906, the three of them formed Rolls-Royce Ltd. (they decided that name sounded better than Rolls-Royce-Johnson) and began producing handmade automobiles.

The first Royce was a small four-seater with a 10-hp, two-cylinder engine, a 75-in. wheelbase, and a top speed of 30 mph. This model was later upgraded in size and power to four cylinders and 20 hp and called the Long 20. Then, after more refinements were made for racing purposes, the Light 20 was born. It had a top speed of nearly 55 mph, a wheelbase of 106 in., and a width of 36 in. It weighed in at 1,350 lb.–150 lb. lighter than the Long 20. The prices for these first cars were between $1,580 and $4,000. The expensive models included special features such as card cases and umbrella holders.

The Rolls-Royce today is as close to handmade as a modern car can be, assembled at the rate of 20 per week with care that has been likened by observers to that taken in making a fine watch. The finished cars are tested and retested, then tested again before they are sold; and after they are sold, Rolls-Royce sees to it that they are serviced as if each owner were a member of the royal family. This kind of care makes Rolls-Royce owners (even those who parted with $114,000 to own the new two-door Camargue) feel that the investment was worth every penny and that, truly, they do own “the best car in the world.”

Despite the company’s early successes and growing reputation for impeccable workmanship and sound engineering, Rolls’s craving for speed and excitement got the better of him. After being taken for an airplane ride by Wilbur Wright, Rolls began losing interest in cars. He bought his own Wright-designed plane and was killed in a crash in 1910. When Johnson died a little over 10 years later, Royce was left to manage the company alone.

The lineage of Rolls-Royce models over the years reads like the family tree of a member of the nobility: the Grey Ghost from 1905; the Silver Ghost, made from 1906 to 1925, the longest model run in history and considered by many to be the finest Rolls-Royce ever made (they were able to go from 0 to 60 mph in an incredible 18 seconds and were so tough and durable that the chassis was chosen as the undercarriage for the 8,000-lb. armored cars the British used in W.W.I); the Phantom I of 1926; the 160-hp Phantom II of 1929; the 1936 Phantom III; and so on, through the Silver Wraiths, Silver Dawns, Silver Clouds, and Silver Shadows that followed.

And then of course there was a fairly high (and unexpected) number of searches for “chopsticks”

The English word “chopstick” seems to have been derived from Chinese Pidgin English, a pidgin in which “chop chop” meant quickly.

Universal Chopstick Etiquette

* Chopsticks are not used to make noise, to draw attention, or to gesticulate. Playing with chopsticks is considered bad  mannered and vulgar (just as playing with cutlery in a Western environment would be deemed crass).
* Chopsticks are not used to move bowls or plates.
* Chopsticks are not used to toy with one’s food or with dishes in common.
* Chopsticks are not used to pierce food, save in rare instances. Exceptions include tearing larger items apart such as vegetables and kimchi. In informal use, small, difficult-to-pick-up items such as cherry tomatoes or fishballs may be stabbed, but this use is frowned upon by traditionalists.
* Chopsticks should not be left standing vertically in a bowl of rice or other food. Any stick-like object pointed upward resembles the incense sticks that some Asians use as offerings to deceased family members; certain funerary rites designate offerings of food to the dead using standing chopsticks.

And in the category of bizarre (and somewhat creepy) searches; the winner is

“beautiful man eyes looking off”

And now back to Bollywood…

Saif splurges on a luxury holiday for Kareena

Kareena Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan

Kareena Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan

Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor, are currently in New York (on their slightly delayed holiday) shooting for Rensil D’ Silva’s film. They finish in a few days after which Saif plans to whisk Kareena off on a 10-day luxury (is there any other kind for Bollywood’s hottest?) holiday in Italy’s exclusive resort the 16th century Villa D’Este, on the shores of Lake Como in Cernobbio! Don’t you just hate them?!

Psst… I hear, “Kareena has not been keeping well so Saif decided it was time for her to take a break. He called their business manager Zahid and canceled all her work commitments for the next two weeks. Except for a brief Swiss holiday in Christmas, the actress has been busy with her films, shows and endorsements for a major part of the year. Kareena also some big releases coming up this year including Karan Johar’s home productions directed by Rensil D’Silva and the one with Kajol and Raj Kumar Hirani’s 3 Idiots.” So Saif has made all the travel arrangements. It will be their first time in Florence. Seeing Michelangelo’s paintings in Florence is also a part of the itinerary. The source adds, “Although it is super-expensive, that was not an issue. Saif feels it’s a well-deserved break and wants to make the trip special. Last time, he had booked an entire chalet in the Swiss Alps. Saif has made Bebo understand the importance of balancing her private and professional life. She won’t be taking any phone calls during the holiday. It’s all about fun.”

Kareena confirms, “Yes, it’s true Saif and I are shortly leaving for our Italian holiday soon but it’s private and I wouldn’t like to divulge the details of our stay.”

Didjya Know?

The villa has housed celebrities like Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Greta Garbo, Gregory Peck, Clark Gable, Eddie Murphy, Liza Minelli, Sylvester Stallone and Bing Crosby.

Alfred Hitchcock shot his first movie The Pleasure Garden here.

The Villa d’Este was built in 1509. From 1550 to 1572, when the villa was nearing completion, Cardinal d’Este created a palatial setting surrounded by a spectacular terraced garden in the late-Renaissance style, which took full advantage of the dramatic slope but required innovations in bringing a sufficient water supply, which was employed in cascades, water tanks, troughs and pools, water jets and fountains, giochi d’acqua. The result is one of the series of great seicento villas with water-play structures in the hills surrounding the Roman Campagna.

Dev and Frieda sitting in a tree, K.I.S.S.I.N.G.

So turns out it was lunch not dinner. Kissing in daylight? Woah there tiger. (I think its hilarious that most people are either shocked or slightly pissed off about this (um mostly guys though, I mean Dev Patel is sweet and all but give me Imran Khan any day.) But gentlemen really why blame Dev? It’s not like she knows you exist anyway right? Although you never know who you might end up sitting next to in business class these days!

An onlooker said: “She couldn’t help cuddling up to him. They kept staring into each other’s eyes. You know what I just realised? Considering that almost everyone on the planet has probably seen Slumdog Millionare by now these two are more recognizable than Kareena Kapoor. Man that’s got to suck for the Queen. (Also if you remember her candid kiss with Shahid Kapoor wasn’t captured quite so tastefully.)

We Are Family

Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor

Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor

Kareena Kapoor was supposed to leave for a month-long schedule of Rensil D’Silva’s film. But she opted for a sudden change of plan. It was Kareena’s mother, Babita Kapoor’s birthday yesterday and while mom (as all mom’s would) insisted that Kareena must not allow her work to suffer Kareena bolted from an ad shoot with Imtiaz Ali in Chandigarh to make it special postponing her and Saif Ali Khan’s trip to New York by a day to arrange a small family get-together over dinner at her swanky new place in Bandra, Mumbai. Kareena says, “It was just family for my Mom. That’s the way she likes it. That’s the way I wanted it to be. Yes, my dad was there too. And of course Saif. He’s very much part of the family.” Oh is he now? 🙂

Of course she was reluctant to reveal any more detail about the evening saying, “My mom is my world. I’d do anything with her. Postponing mine and Saif’s trip to NY was nothing. What did I give my mom? My time and my love. That’s all she wants.” (Incidentally, Saif had the cozy gathering on Monday night in splits with his jokes anecdotes and mimicry.) Considering how well he managed to blend with the Kapoors at the birthday party, it’s pretty evident that he’s the unofficial 2nd Kapoor son-in-law!

Kareena Kapoor and Shahid Kapoor

I’m also guessing she wanted a little comfort zone before her NY trip with the BF since she had to finish dubbing for “Kambakkht Ishq” and the woefully-stalled “Milenge Milenge” with ex squeeze Shahid Kapoor. Kareena says, “We’re all professionals here. For me it doesn’t matter who the leading man in “Milenge Milenge” is. For me what is important is that I made a commitment to two of my favourite people in the industry producer Boney Kapoor and director Satish Kaushik who’ve stood by me from the beginning of my career. How can I let them down? Boney wants a summer release for his film. I have to complete my dubbing before I leave.”
FYI This film is special because after “Jab We Met” this is the only time Kareena will be seen with Shahid Kapoor (especially for fans of the JWM pairing.)

P.S. I Googled some pictures from the Kapoor family album and found some super cute ones of “mom” from way back when! (Spot the Kapoor kiddo resemblance?)

In case you didn’t get your fill of filmi photos from my fly on the way perspective from Monday night (and admittedly amature photography skills) The official pictures are now in from Manish Malhotra’s post show party hosted by Pradeep Gidwani, Managing Director, Carlsberg. Abhishek Bachchan and Kareena Kapoor

Happier Times: Hrithik Roshan, Kareena Kapoor & Abhishek Bachchan

After the Karishma Kapoor-Abhishek Bachchan controversy which ended their engagement Kareena Kapoor lost out on a buddy and her debut costar from Refugee. Apparently they are still not on talking terms but Kareena is willing to work with him somewhere down the line,  she says, “Like I said it’s never been a pitfall if I was not part of a film because he never wanted me to be a part of it, I think I would thank him for that, because its fine if he doesn’t want to work with me because I don’t want any actor to be uncomfortable. Acting is a profession in which you have to be very comfortable with each other. It’s sad that it had to reach this point but in my life there’s still room for Abhishek, I would say that quite openly that there’s still room for him. I don’t know in what way he is uncomfortable, but it’s sad, because films will come and films will go, but I just wish this little bit of room was still left in his heart for me. But if someone is uncomfortable, then I will also be uncomfortable, so its best left at that, but of course in my heart there will always be a door open.”

So I guess the verdicts out. Apart from the glamorous (albeit unlikely) queen bee of Bollywood searches Gauri Khan, everyone wants to know what nawab saheb Saif Ali Khan and Bebo Kareena Kapoor are up to. Right I’m on it!
