Could this be the Slumdog Effect?

Mallika Sherwat and Yaani

Mallika Sherwat and Yaani

Seriously I’m beginning to think this might be some kind of crazy conspiracy to blow my mind, that or Mallika Sherawat has some seriously wicked PR skills. Remember her new found friendships with Oprah Winfrey and Usher? Well guess who just became the most recent addition to that list? The 54-year-old Greek legend Yanni! How weird is that. Right?!

He dedicated his new song “Changes” to her at the “Yanni Voices” concert in Los Angeles. In front of a crowd of 7,000 music enthusiasts Yanni announced, “This one is for you Mallika.”As you can see from the video clip she was loving it and jumped up to accept the honor, despite the fact that a lot of the audience had no idea who she was (or maybe that’s why?) Granted this happens to also be the first time that Yanni has dedicated his composition to anyone. Apparently he did a solo gig for her post the concert as well!

I hear they met in LA for post-production of her forthcoming film Hisss. But they’ve also exchanged tweets on the  microblogging website Twitter. According to the sources, Yanni invited Mallika to attend his LA concert, to which coyly replied that she would, provided he dedicate a song to her. The video screens showed images of Yanni’s performance in India at the Taj Mahal in March 1997 during the performance.

Of course Mallika couldn’t stop gushing about it (and rightly so) on her Twitter page (which has the creepiest picture of her on display btw!)

Mallika Ushers in a new friendship

Mallika and Usher

Mallika and Usher

You know, Mallika Sherwat never ceases to amaze me. After becoming the first Bollywood celebrity to have a milkshake named after her at the hotspot ‘Millions of Milkshakes’ in Hollywood city and becoming the latest recipient of the prestigious ‘Arts Award’ in New York (for her unparalleled contributions to and influence with the Indian diaspora, seriously?) she’s even supposedly BFFs with Oprah Winfrey!

Last I heard her new buddy is none other than the hip-hop superstar Usher himself! Apparently they met at the BEST (Better Educated Students for Tomorrow) annual Brunch at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in LA recently. They are apparently so tight that Mallika recently Twittered @MallikaLA,“Met Usher at LA’s Best Brunch. He’s very handsome” and 12 minutes later… “OMG! Usher has promised to dedicate a song to me :)” When a journo asked Mallika for a pic of her Grammy winner friend, she happily shared one, adding: “Why are all the good ones married?”

Who’s willing to bet that she’ll end up in his next music video if she repeats that skimpy black semi-dominatrix outfit she donned for Maxim?!

Usher is also an actor, music producer, philanthropist and entrepreneur. At the brunch, he was given the Family Focus Award. When he met Mallika, she was in LA working on her first Hollywood venture Hisss and attended the event stylishly kitted out in a white knotted shirt with black pants, carrying a huge black handbag.

Usher and Ashton

Meanwhile the real Usher is finally on twitter “Hello to the Twitter Nation…I said I wouldn’t do this. I’m on the set. Ashton and Demi did it!! If you can’t beat em join em! Here goes!!!” @usherraymondiv and is busy shooting for a flick Five Killers with Ashton Kutcher (a major Twitterati @aplusk) and Katherine Heigl (although Usher doesn’t appear to have added Mallika yet, I’m sure his wife Tameka wouldn’t approve!)

On another tweet though, she’s recently taken to posting random little tips for men via Twitter.

“Mallika’s Tips for Men #1”: talk deep, low and slow, move even slower, with confidence 🙂

“Mallika’s Tips for Men” #2: Dental hygiene. No onion breath!

Riveting stuff. I can’t wait for Tip # 3.

Wine Up

My absence should probably indicate that I’ve had a pretty successful weekend! Apologies for the delay but I’m all set now to give you the skinny on my high society Saturday night in Mumbai. So my Saturday evening started with a very “propah” cup of tea at the Four Seasons Hotel, Mumbai where they serve you a large variety of teas in darling little glass tea pots and even give you an hourglass timer to get your brew just right. (I hear there was a Fendi sale on too, oh goody that means it’ll only take like two months salary to buy a bag instead of three now. I’ll add it to my list!) Anyway the last time I was there (tucking into their four level rack of tea savories Mallika Sherawat stomped (yes stomped) in for a photo shoot dressed in black and looking pissed off, or wait maybe she was just on diva autopilot.)

Later that night I headed over to the Leela Kempinski (where for the most part all I’ve ever seen besides Bling is a blurry view of the lobby as we stumble in or out, depending on what side of the after party we’re on) for a super stylish wine and food pairing which turned out to be quite delightful and just a tiny bit intimidating for the average wine rookie like myself. We started with a chilled glass of white (a Riesling I’m told) with Shamita Singha and Craig Wedge at 6 degrees, an impressive bar/brunch spot at the Leela where the rich & restless often go to brunch and later chill by the pool. I had a nice chat with Dharti Desai the founder and CEO of Finewinesnmore, a charming little lady with a playful air about her as she jokingly confided, “whatever we don’t sell I intend to drink!” Eventually everyone made their way over to Jamavar where Chef Surender Mohan had conjured up a special mini feast to pair with a selection of German wines. Yum.

The cool thing was our table turned out to be quite a motley crew of people including a scion of the Leela hotel chain Aishwarya Nair aka “The Heiress” (who really likes her pictures taken in profile), Dharti Desai, Bhisham Mansukhani (a fellow paparazzo and wine aficionado), Zainab Barodawala aka “Lady Liquid” (the editor of Liquid a B2B magazine for India’s hospitality industry), a friend of mine (who was soon dubbed “Alex”), Craig & Shamita who mingled with expertise and myself.

Amidst much swirling of wine and discussions about its bouquet, legs and flavor we had a really good time giggling about everything from (the eccentric at best, loco at worst) Suhas Awchat (that’s a whole other blog’s worth coming soon), how stupid Arbaz Khan was for ordering Merlot for Priyanka Chopra and himself in a scene from Fashion to all the must-watch movies. (I can recommend a Russell Crowe film called “A Good Year” to all wine lovers, you’ll feel like a glass right after the movie!) At dinner I did learn the following however;

The more “legs” (those are the streaks you see inside the glass after you swirl) the more potent the wine.
People who love Pinot wines think its funny to refer to themselves as Pinot-philes.
If your Riesling has a slight petrol aroma, that’s a good Riesling.
In a perfect food pairing you should always be able to constantly taste both the food and your wine.
Wine experts are known as Masters of Wine and Master Sommeliers.
Morel’s are mushrooms and damn they’re good!

Clearly there is a whole world going on here which I was not really aware of. In fact Shamita is off to study more about wine this weekend and then on a girlie trip to Amsterdam. My friend Alex did ask her the all important question about becoming a wine connoisseur. “How do you not get totally drunk in the process?” She revealed that she learnt this at school (the hard way) that you’re supposed to spit it out since you really don’t need to swallow it to taste it, but occasionally she cheats.

I know the whole wine shpiel can get a little pretension sometimes but I guess that’s why they always offer you liquid courage before you have to deal with it. I like wine people. They’re alright.

The Number Game

Kangana Ranaut

Kangana Ranaut

This just in; apparently the Mumbai Mirror has printed a story about Kangana Ranaut being 28 and not 22 years old. * gasp*

The actress is furious and whipped out her passport forcing the tabloid into printing a retraction tomorrow. Her PR machinery has kicked in requesting the media not the fuel the rumor (ironically I probably wouldn’t have known about it to begin with had it not been for the sms but whatever!) I love the Pahlaj Nihalani quote, “When we asked Pahlaj about Kangana’s age, he brushed off the issue saying that, A woman’s age in Bollywood is never above 21-22.”

This reminds me however of another age controversy to do with the notorious Mallika Sherwat (formerly known as Reema Lamba. In 2006 the tabloids insisted that Mallika could not be 25 years old as claimed by her mother. Instead, she could well have been 35 years old based on a group photo taken way back 1995 when she was working as an air hostess. Records showing her age then to be 23. Her fabulous comeback to that of course was an amused, “You know something. I’m 45 and I have two grand kids!”
