And here’s the dope: Fantastic turnout. Hosted by AD Singh and Che Kurrien, the event saw the creme de la creme of the city. The highlight however was undoubtedly, Hollywood superstar Gerard Butler (of 300, Phantom of the Opera and Rock n Rolla fame.) Riding in on a motorcycle soon after Gerard was Gregory David Roberts (Shantaram) with wife, Princess (really?) Francoise Sturdza and the third unexpected guest of the evening was Anthony Mandler (renowned Hollywood Music Director known especially for his work with R&B artist Rihanna.) Other guests included Deveika and Suresh Bhojwani (recently spotted on their way back from Goa), Alex Kuruvilla, Gautam Singhania, Yash (that shirt) and Avanti Birla, Ashwin Deo, Raja Dhody, Niketan Madhok, Narendra Kumar, Farokh Chotia, Sreenivasan Jain, Ashish Raheja, Ananya Bannerjee, Pratima and Gaurav Bhatia and Ramona Narang and Bruno and several more from the fashion and entertainment fraternity were in attendance including RJ Tarana Raja Kapoor (love the cutesy half smile), Karishma Tanna, After Hours hostess Amrit Maghera, Shruti Sharma, Vipasha Aggarwal, Monikangana Dutta, Priya Reddy, Inder Bajwa and more. Others who were at the event included Farokh Chotia, Sreenivasan Jain, Ashish Raheja, Ananya Bannerjee, Pratima and Gaurav Bhatia and Ramona Narang and Bruno. The eclectic mix of people, surprise guests and the IPL and Football action enhanced by the GQ glam quotient made for an evening of devilishly haute fun. (Oh and the percussionist was the bomb.)

And guess what? You know how I’m always saying the press kit has all the posed out pictures? Well check it out they’re getting cheeky and I like it!

So I was organizing my thousands of pictures (no exaggeration) and I came across some fun ones from November last year. Yes, another Indigo brunch (where some fun face painting was going on courtesy Deepika Roy on buddies Rahul Akerkar and Anish Trivedi) followed by a paint party at Amitabh & Akanksha (the-most-beautiful-girl-in-the-world) Nanda’s house, much to their son Satya’s delight!  I also heard an eerie story about how the occasional finger falls from the sky into their garden because they are situated next to the Parsi “Tower of Silence” in Walkeshwar, Mumbai. Eeks.) Kadambari was a good sport about letting her legs be used as an artist’s canvas along with Narendra Kumar and Nirja Shah who were in their usual good spirits. (I like people like that.)

Incidentally, Amitabh writes an extremely clever blog aptly titled www.whattothink.org (keeping indian media honest – since way before 2008) which features a variety of tirades against “the rising vapidity of our society – portrayed in the pop culture barometer of its advertising and mass communication” and encourages submissions from readers to illtellyou@whattothink.org. Love it.

ss3FASHION….UNINHIBITED.
The last day of fashion week was all about pure fashion. Just how it should be. All the bollywood mania was over the day before and now it was time to get back to business. Anil Chopra, Advisor- Lakme, looked like a happy man and the look on his face suggested that all had gone well. “We have had 90% attendance in terms of the buyers that registered so its been a full house” said Ravi Krishnan on behalf of IMG. Fashion is serious business. And we are definitely heading towards featuring on the world map. Narendra Kumar showcased yet another line but this time it was concentrated on women. His inspiration was all us women who love to gossip. By the way in my opinion men like to gossip equally as much but just don’t like to admit it.  It was all about 3 friends who are liberated, don’t really care about what people think and indulge in uninhibited talk. He had 3 girls chatting away live in the sound console as the background score for his show which I thought was a pretty cool idea. Sailex showed off his stunning line yet again. I remember last year he was one of the GenNext designers and we loved his collection even then. Today he s flying solo and was amazing to see how the GenNext platform has helped him to do that. Arjun Saluja showcased some fabulous construction and Mandira Wirk outdid herself this time. I’m glad she has come to Bombay to be a part of Lakme fashion week as according to me she never got her due in Delhi. Her line was super chic and very autumn-winter. Beautiful coats and skirts that made me want to be in the winter of Milan or New York. That should actually be the spirit of winter where u are dressed up such that one is  happy being there. A lot of the designers briefed the models to look grim and austere trying to keep the mood of autumn winter going but loosen up guys, winter isn’t so bad! Make up and hair looks for most of the designers worked and thick bushy eyebrows was a rage this time so time to grow out those eyebrows ladies! So all in all I saw a lot of evolvement take place this season and all those stories about designs n things being ripped off from someone else, I’m sorry I beg to differ. Most of the worlds designers follow a fashion forecast that is predicted by authentic governing bodies that set out trends for every season. So how can anyone blame designers for copying each other when all they are doing is keeping in mind the trend for the next season? Moreover with our Indian designers, all come from different yet similar backgrounds of culture and tradition that a lot of them like to preserve and project in their clothes. Would you call that ripping each others designs, looks or even workmanship? None of our designers are so foolish to out and out copy another when they know we have some excellent fashion critics sitting in the front row and a host of buyers looking for business in something different and new. Inspirations could also land up being similar depending upon the scenario of the times, and its called coincidence not plagiarism. I think our industry has grown enough to understand that we grow together as a whole and not by eating each other. And on this note, I would like to end my finale piece. See you next season.

Fashion Week Day 4: Manish Malhotra

2667_79276970498_542990498_2867014_1845991_n

Last night I made the rookie mistake of lingering a tad too long in the sponsor lounge and ended up having to watch the show from in there since the crowd for Manish Malhotra’s shindig was swelling way past seating capacity. I’ll get to the show in a second but I assure you there’s always loads of entertainment lingering in the hallway if you keep your eyes open!

Kim Jagtiani (sporting a shock of purple hair) was catching up with Shehnaz Treasurywala, Divya Mohta (carried off a funky combination of accessories with style, I guess it helps if you design them) Anaita Shroff Adajania looked comfy but classy in a flowy white dress, Narendra Kumar looked pretty pleased with how his men’s show had gone, live band and all. He was telling me how the guys looked really spiffy like you’ve never seen them before, bow ties, tuxedo’s and jeans. (I have to agree, mostly male models end up looking like a bit of a caricature of themselves in the outfits they’re given but Nari appears to have rectified that for at least one show.) Bandana Tewari was racing around happily and when I asked her how she manages to do it considering it was now day 4 of non-stop activity (and late night partying) she laughed, “This is nothing darling, I’ve just done Paris, Milan and London Fashion Week.” (And all this without Redbull? How?) Then of course I spotted a familiar face and was just about to do the obligatory “Hey, how’ve you been?’ *kiss* *Kiss* when a friend of mine reminded me why he looked  so familiar. Ali holds the distinction of being the only male stripper in Mumbai who bachelorette after bachelorette has had the (somewhat queasy) pleasure of witnessing perform. But I guess we have to give him props for holding the monopoly in the biz.

peek-a-boo!

The buzz about Shah Rukh Khan arriving, getting his make up done, and that the show wouldn’t start for another half hour made the rounds and then suddenly there was music as the first of the golden girls strutted down the stage. Manish Malhotra’s design skills are unquestionable however the show seemed awfully short for all the hoopla around it. The camera crews were torn between panning up the model’s endless legs to micro mini gold boy shorts and focusing on a dishy front bench made up of Gauri Khan, Kajol & Tanisha Mukherjee, Hrithik & Susan Roshan, Karan Johar, Arjun & Meher Rampal, Tusshar Kapoor, Sophie Chaudry, Ritesh Deshmukh, Raveena Tandon and Sridevi & Boney Kapoor. Shah Rukh made an appearance in a black and gold ensemble with a matching sling for his recovering shoulder and proceeded to do a 5 minute stand up act. There’s no denying the fact that he could pretty much do anything at all and still steal the show. A few inside jokes with his celebrity bench followed by a global diss on all male models “I hope Gauri still respects me in the morning” and he was whisked off to the after party where there was a VVIP section within the VIP section and a some excellent strawberry martinis.

Karan Johar

I felt mildly bad for Tusshar Kapoor who seemed lost puppy like as the last celebrity standing when SRK and his entourage slipped out. (I’m not sure how Sophie ended up part of that pack.) I’m guessing there was an after party to the after party we’ll never see pictures of. Kjo meanwhile seemed absolutely comfortable hanging out but perhaps there is more under the surface than meets the eye since Hrithik Roshan appears to have dethroned him as Shah Rukh Khan’s current BBF.

Mrinmoy

Mrinmoy

Honorable mention to the paparazzi who do this night after night hoping to capture that money shot. I also met the charming Mrinmoy who runs a fantastic deli called Table of Contents in Khar, Mumbai.

Oh and here’s yet more proof that male models deserve all the Zoolander flack they get. These boys (one in a wife beater) seriously thought I was taking their picture because I’m a fan.

And yet somehow the guy in the Ed Hardy gear seems even further down the food chain. (Can someone please explain to me what the obsession is?) The only explanation that comes to my mind is that perhaps they got it free and its shiny so hey why not? But who gets dressed up thinking I look really hot in these gold shorts, pimp hat and kolhapuri chappals, all I need is to do is pop the collar on my Ed Hardy tee shirt to finish me off!

P.S. I was told by an ardent follower that perhaps I’m not bitchy enough, I’m trying to keep it within reason and avoid flaming for the sake of it but I hope you enoyed the meow factor in the post 🙂

Backstage with Shamita III

Day 1: backstage was abuzz bright and early. Shantanu & Nikhil and their gorgeous creations opened the week. Certain ‘so called’ stars were thrusted upon them but luckily for them Sameera Reddy didn’t fit into their outfit and Neha Uberoi was late~

But the brother duo were only too happy as their clothes didn’t need stars or even jewellery to complement them. Seriously, their clothes are celebrities in themselves. Their show started on time and this situation was the perfect example as to why we models are the only ones who should stick to the ramp. We’re professional, always on time, and fit into everything!

Priyanka Chopra

Priyanka Chopra

Meanwhile, a couple of girls who can actually be given due credit turned up on time for Narendra Kumar’s show. Priyanka Chopra and Mughda Godse. These girls have been models before and are even more familiar now with how the industry works as they’ve slipped into their characters for their film ‘Fashion’.

We joked, laughed and chatted backstage like one big family. Priyanka was ready on time and hung out with us, warm and friendly like she’s always been – that’s what I call being professional and humble.

Shane & Falguni Peacock

Shamita's Peacock Pick

The last show for Day 1 was Shane & Falguni Peacock. Their collection was true to the upcoming Spring/Summer trend – colourful and non-coordinated. Young, but with a hint of vintage style and very funky, perfect for ‘spendthrifts’.

Tired and hungry we all made our way to Olive for a big, big dinner. Who says models don’t eat?
