This just in, Nina Manuel (who goes by Midnight Manuel on Facebook) is clearly living it up, New York style with beau Luv Shah (remember this halloween party?) Can’t believe she even got to hang out with John Legend! He’s awesome. She says she misses Bombay but is loving New York, so don’t expect her back any time soon. Just for fun I asked her what she thinks of her After Hours replacement Amrit Maghera lets see what she says…
Amrit Maghera and Nina Manuel
Sooooooo Nina says, “I haven’t seen the show …..so I cant say.”
(I’m sure enough people have told her that Amrit isn’t quite filling her stilettos with the je ne sais qua!
What do you think?
The pret brand, from the House of Ritu Kumar has unveiled their Spring Summer 2009 collection. Amrish Kumar (Ritu’s son) has designed a collection full of color, traditional prints on contemporary modern silhouettes, and vibrant energy. Amrish Kumar’s music label “Mummy Daddy Records” set the tone for the early evening preview.
Walking the ramp Parvati Omnakuttam (Miss World Runner up), Nina Manuel, Zoha Tapia and Rachel showcased the collection. The buzz words of the season appear to be “tribal,””solids,” and “prints.”
Its official. The frequency of “Page 3” parties must have dropped way down low considering the latest edition of After Hrs. has Nina Manuel reminsicing about “this day that year” in parties. Although I’ll admit Will Smith hitting the Taj Lands End for the launch of a new Channel called Pix was pretty money. (I actually walked right past him and give him the biggest smile I have ever given anyone in my life and true to character he gave me a 100 watt-er right back *sigh*)
Oh by the way that was also one of the parties we were trying to pull off our mega Page 3 coop at with my friend Renny Zaveri posing as a new starlet on the scene, all part of a major experiment by our team at Mid Day to see just what it takes to fake your way into the limelight. Well it worked, pretty soon we had the Mumbai Mirror calling her “Subhash Ghai’s latest find” all it took was a cool 450,000rs in clothes, make up, hair, hired cars etc. and some cleverly contrived “honey bee effect” moments. (The honey bee effect as defined by our chief photographer is what happens when one member of the paparazzi takes a picture, often the rest will follow even if they don’t recognize the person being photographed- just in case the nobody turns out to be a cash-up-front-for-a-photo-of somebody!)
Vivek Oberoi: he shoots...
Vivek Oberoi: He scores!
Ok so here’s my flashback. Sometime in 2006 I spotted Vivek Oberoi getting cosy on the dancefloor at Prive with a PYT who fell hook line and sinker for his 100 watt smile!
Last night Gc (Guess Collection) Watches launched in India at a smokey soiree over cocktails and casino chips. The real shocker of course was that Mumbai’s well-heeled showed up for an 8:30pm event at 9:30pm! This, I’m guessing (pardon the pun) must be some kind of Fashion Week hangover where the fashionably late missed most of the fashion. But anyway, today’s party trend is to get a social butterfly to play host for you which Anish Trivedi (sans Cigar since the smoking ban) did with elan at the Trident Hotel Regal Room. (That’s the hotel previously-known-as-the-Hilton-formerly-known-as-the-Oberoi) while everyone bounced to the beat of DJ Megha Kawale.
Narendra Kumar Ahmed and Nina Manuel
Among the first few to arrive were Dolly Thakore, Krsna Mehta, Vijay Kalantri and Rashmi Uday Singh followed by Kim Sharma, Narendra Kumar Ahmed (revealing that he needed to go hat shopping), Kadambari, Monica Vazirali, Esther & Raju Daswani, Lubna Adams, Naaz& Remu Zaveri (who seemed to be on a roll at the blackjack table), Ganesh Hegde, Chaya Momaya and Ashish Raheja with his new foreign flame.
At some point 12 Brazilian models sashayed through the crowd and I can safely say the watches adorned on their black-gloved hands were not what everyone was staring at.
Lisa Haydon and Karan Bhoj
The desi model brigade trooped in later including Kelly Dorjee, Carol Gracias, Mashoom Singha, Nina Manuel (with her after hours camera crew), and Lisa Haydon with DJ-boyfriend Karan Bhoj (psst He’s Nina Manuel’s ex – good thing the Joker was MIA!)

Beauty & The Beast (Photo credit: Shana Koenig)
Nina Manuel (evidently as beauty-queen barbie) was out and about with boyfriend Luv Shah as the joker (two nights in a row). I think he looked suitably spooky (although I was hoping someone would have gone all out and thrown on the nurses outfit and carrot-top curls.) Things must be going well; he’s a cute boy and all but it takes a lot of love to kiss that face!
So our fittings are finally over after five very long days. I won’t lie… It hasn’t been fun. I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again. This profession only looks glamorous, but when you see the other side of its exhausting. The next few days will definitely be more entertaining as there will be a flurry of activities and rumor has it that there is a secret model lounge being constructed in the basement with beds so we can catch a nap between shows which I am really looking forward to!
This fashion week might be showcasing spring summer 2009 but all of us were joking as to how this is more like a ‘Frock and Gown festival with tick-tock shoes’. Barring a few designers, most of them have loose fitted silhouettes and award ceremony inspired gowns. Speaking of which, I particularly liked Swapnil Shinde’s gowns this time. He has definitely come a long way. And the colors that Arshiya Fakih has used in her collection for Araiya. Her only accessories this time are a pair of sunglasses which are quite funky.
A bunch of our regular girls are back from another fashion week so it was fun to hang out with them telling us stories of the past week in Delhi. Sabhyasachi very carefully and thoughtfully put his finale collection together, fitting us all patiently one by one.
But next seasons fashion is definitely not patient. Colors are extremely varied like a box of crayons. This trend is clearly hinting that the coming summer season has absolutely no rules and no boundaries. Contrasting colors are being thrown in together, shoes and belts don’t match anymore, punk rock meets sophistication. Co ordination can become a crime. Fashion is finally free!
The much anticipated GQ launch lived up to (and depending on how long you stuck it out) exceeded expectations at The Four Seasons cleverly combining their “official” hotel launch with the unveiling of the very swanky men’s magazine (which, considering the eye candy on the cover just as many women will undoubtedly be reading.)
Scattered through the lounge, bar, lobby and 33rd floor (where a superb band played the blues) Mumbai’s glitterati (apart from every chic black ensemble imaginable) decided to boldly go where no Page 3 perennial has gone before when it comes to style and color…. at one point I even spotted a dude in a kilt!
Malini Ramani & Bandana Tiwari both wearing notably unique and spectacular outfits (one a mini gold dress and the other a well-fitted kaftan (Niharika Khanna unfortunately may have gone a bit X-Files with those blue tights, but what do I know.)
Also Nina Manuel did it again (we should just call this “pulling a Nina” from now on I think – with here not-there there mini dress which did it’s job of turning heads.
Ranvir Shorey and Konkana Sen Sharma breezed through San Qi (which I’m told aspires to be South Mumbai’s bigger and bolder version of China House) around 2am looking exquisitely put together and very much in love.
Arjun Rampal, who continues to ride on his recent wave of success, worked the room with a dishy-dude vibe.
Carol Gracias was overheard having a rant in the ladies room over a fashion show that took place earlier that evening in another part of town (quite clearly miffed at Shamita Singha but luckily no cat fight!)
Narendra Kumar Ahmed & Timothy Rennie
Narendra Kumar (and his signature hat) hold the clear distinction of being one of the last off the dance floor along with an adorably enthu dhoti-and-jacket clad Timothy Rennie (Vogue’s art director) who did creative variations of the bhangra all night long.
Even the usually swanky and sedate Osh Bhabani, Homi Adajania and Anaita Shroff Adajania broke out some serious moves on the dance floor to DJ Gordon’s unbelievable mixes.
Alex Kuruvilla & Me
Meanwhile the extremely happy host Alex Kuruvilla beamed all night and managed to extend the DJ’s deadline by an hour when it became clear no one was quite done bopping to the beat. Now that’s what you call a party!
