Google on a Roll(s)

Time to revisit the Google graph and what key search words are landing them up on this blog. Gauri Khan has virtually dropped off the radar and hence been dethroned by another sort of royalty altogether (of the four-wheeled persuasion) and Priyanka Chopra has over taken Kareena Kapoor (boohoo Bebo) but if it’s any consolation she squeezes in just past Kangna Ranaut (but mostly because of a spelling confusion) and the Obamas’ new pet, the Portuguese water dog.

Didjya Know?

Shortly after this first successful test, Royce took Rolls and Johnson for a ride in his new car. It so impressed the two auto entrepreneurs that in March of 1906, the three of them formed Rolls-Royce Ltd. (they decided that name sounded better than Rolls-Royce-Johnson) and began producing handmade automobiles.

The first Royce was a small four-seater with a 10-hp, two-cylinder engine, a 75-in. wheelbase, and a top speed of 30 mph. This model was later upgraded in size and power to four cylinders and 20 hp and called the Long 20. Then, after more refinements were made for racing purposes, the Light 20 was born. It had a top speed of nearly 55 mph, a wheelbase of 106 in., and a width of 36 in. It weighed in at 1,350 lb.–150 lb. lighter than the Long 20. The prices for these first cars were between $1,580 and $4,000. The expensive models included special features such as card cases and umbrella holders.

The Rolls-Royce today is as close to handmade as a modern car can be, assembled at the rate of 20 per week with care that has been likened by observers to that taken in making a fine watch. The finished cars are tested and retested, then tested again before they are sold; and after they are sold, Rolls-Royce sees to it that they are serviced as if each owner were a member of the royal family. This kind of care makes Rolls-Royce owners (even those who parted with $114,000 to own the new two-door Camargue) feel that the investment was worth every penny and that, truly, they do own “the best car in the world.”

Despite the company’s early successes and growing reputation for impeccable workmanship and sound engineering, Rolls’s craving for speed and excitement got the better of him. After being taken for an airplane ride by Wilbur Wright, Rolls began losing interest in cars. He bought his own Wright-designed plane and was killed in a crash in 1910. When Johnson died a little over 10 years later, Royce was left to manage the company alone.

The lineage of Rolls-Royce models over the years reads like the family tree of a member of the nobility: the Grey Ghost from 1905; the Silver Ghost, made from 1906 to 1925, the longest model run in history and considered by many to be the finest Rolls-Royce ever made (they were able to go from 0 to 60 mph in an incredible 18 seconds and were so tough and durable that the chassis was chosen as the undercarriage for the 8,000-lb. armored cars the British used in W.W.I); the Phantom I of 1926; the 160-hp Phantom II of 1929; the 1936 Phantom III; and so on, through the Silver Wraiths, Silver Dawns, Silver Clouds, and Silver Shadows that followed.

And then of course there was a fairly high (and unexpected) number of searches for “chopsticks”

The English word “chopstick” seems to have been derived from Chinese Pidgin English, a pidgin in which “chop chop” meant quickly.

Universal Chopstick Etiquette

* Chopsticks are not used to make noise, to draw attention, or to gesticulate. Playing with chopsticks is considered bad  mannered and vulgar (just as playing with cutlery in a Western environment would be deemed crass).
* Chopsticks are not used to move bowls or plates.
* Chopsticks are not used to toy with one’s food or with dishes in common.
* Chopsticks are not used to pierce food, save in rare instances. Exceptions include tearing larger items apart such as vegetables and kimchi. In informal use, small, difficult-to-pick-up items such as cherry tomatoes or fishballs may be stabbed, but this use is frowned upon by traditionalists.
* Chopsticks should not be left standing vertically in a bowl of rice or other food. Any stick-like object pointed upward resembles the incense sticks that some Asians use as offerings to deceased family members; certain funerary rites designate offerings of food to the dead using standing chopsticks.

And in the category of bizarre (and somewhat creepy) searches; the winner is

“beautiful man eyes looking off”

And now back to Bollywood…

Kangana’s Not So Sexy Statement.

kangna-ranaut-wallpaper-16460-5641

Kangana Ranaut

Kangana Ranut turned 22 yesterday and invited all the film units of the movie Raaz, Fashion and Kites to her glittering bash. Of course boyfriend Adhyahan Suman was right there playing host right alongside her but superstars Priyanka Chopra, and Hrithik Roshan couldn’t attend one was in Hong Kong the other in London.

So I don’t know who’s doing her press briefings but how come nobody told her not to say things like, ”I am a very sexless person. I have never tried to create a sexy image of myself. From the very first day, I have been clear about my objectives. I am an actress and I am here to do my job.”

Umm yes and but being a Bollywood actress, wouldn’t that mostly involve being sexy? And it appears she’s totally forgotten about he super sexy calendar shoot for Daboo Ratnani’s 2009 edition.

Too good Kangana, too good.

Actress Amrita Arora wed longtime boyfriend Shakeel Ladak in a lavish Catholic wedding at the Olive, Mumbai earlier this week. They even had a sangeet choreographed by Bollywood choreographer Farah Khan and hosted by Alvira Agnihotri (Salman Khan’s sister).

Amrita was dressed in an off-white vintage wedding gown designed by fashion designer Ashley Rebello, the actress will have her formal Nikaah today and then the couple will then proceed on their honeymoon.

The wedding was attended by Katrina Kaif, Priyanka Chopra, Ness Wadia, Urmila Matondkar, Ritesh Deshmukh, Farhan Akhtar, Gul Panag, Karishma Kapoor, Saif Ali Khan, Kim Sharma, Amrita Arora, Shakeel Ladak, Raveena Tandon, Malaika Arora Khan, Salman Khan, Aftab Shivdasani, Aditi Govitrikar, Tusshar Kapoor, Arshad Warsi, Suzanne Roshan Khan, Dino Morea, Neelam Kothari, Alvira Khan, Karan Johar, Sajid Khan and Arbaaz Khan. (Shah Rukh Khan, for obvious reasons, didn’t show up  Salman Khan was there) but Gauri Khan more than made up for his absence. Amrita’s Kambakht Ishq co-star Akshay Kumar and his wife Twinkle were also missing in action.

Amrita’s bridesmaid  and best friend Kareena Kapoor was the first to come and the last to leave. A little birdie tells me Saif was seen holding Kareena very close as if to say ‘Marry me right here, right now, Bebo’. Apparently Wardha and Karishma Kapoor almost didn’t make it to the wedding as the zippers of both their gowns came undone just as they were about to leave home. Fortunately, fresh zips and damage control allowed them to make it, unfortunately they missed they actual wedding.

Miss India 2009

Femina Miss India 2009

Psst, tomorrow I’m going to get a sneak preview of  the next crop of wannabe Miss India’s at Hotel Sahara Star, Mumbai. Watch this space for pictures of the new PYT’s and Bollywood’s generation next.

Reita Faria

Madhu Sapre

Madhu Sapre

Flashback to 1966: Reita Faria, a young medical student from Mumbai, created history by becoming the first Indian to be crowned Miss World. However, it took almost twenty-six years for another Indian to win at an international beauty pageant. The turning point for the Femina Miss India pageant was when Madhu Sapre was selected the second runner-up at the Miss Universe contest in 1992. After she almost missed the Miss Universe crown that year, a lot more planning was put into the competition. And so began the complex industry of “How to be a Miss India 101.”

Sushmita Sen

Aishwarya Rai

Aishwarya Rai

Evidently it works. In 1994, we witnessed the twin triumphs of Sushmita Sen and Aishwarya Rai, who were crowned Miss Universe and Miss World, respectively. Since then, there have been an array of winsome beauties from India winning international titles: Diana Hayden, Miss World 1997, Yukta Mookhey, Miss World 1999, Lara Dutta, Miss Universe 2000, Priyanka Chopra, Miss World 2000, and Diya Mirza, who scored a hat-trick for India, by winning the Miss Asia-Pacific 2000 title.

What do all these ladies have in common (apart from the short-lived desire for world peace and ending poverty for the duration of the pageant) is the fact that every single one has made a B line for Bollywood (hey maybe that’s why they call it a “B” line.)

Love Story 2009

Priyanka Chopra at the Victory premiere

Priyanka Chopra and Harman Baweja

Priyanka Chopra and Harman Bhaweja

So it’s official. Harman Bhaweja and Priyanka Chopra are splitsville. Surprisingly though they’ve refrained from any mud-slinging and are keeping it “business as usual.” In fact Harman personally invited his now “ex” for the premiere of Victory at Cinemax Andehri, Mumbai last night while she was shooting in Jodhpur for an ad film and as promised, she showed up (mummy-daddy in tow.) Possibly the one case of “good friends” in Bollywood that isn’t code for anything (well not anymore anyway!)

It’s unlikely that piggy chops will have any trouble finding a new squeeze in no time. In fact rumor has it that Shahid Kapoor may be just the man for the job…

Now get this; although Priyanka kissed Akshay Kumar in her very first film, Andaaz, she’s been pretty picky ever since about doing on-screen smoochies. I hear she’s agreed to kiss Shahid in Vishal Bhardwaj’s Kaminay however “since the script demanded it” and there’s no denying the chemistry. Ironically she had refused to kiss Harman in his debut movie Love Story 2050 and the fact that she even kissed Arjan Bajwa in Madhur Bhandarkar’s Fashion left Harman pretty peeved!

Ms. Piggy didn’t you know? You have to kiss the frog for before he actually turns into a prince!

I’ll be all right!

Dostana Preview: Welcome to Miami! This is where Dharma Productions latest offering ‘Dostana’ is set.

When Sameer (Abhishek Bachchan) and Kunal (John Abraham) are turned down for an apartment because the landlady doesn’t want two strapping young men to corrupt her sexy young niece Neha (Priyanka Chopra) they obviously pretend to be to be gay. That’s just peachy untill they actually meet the very sexy Neha and therein lies the dilemma. When Neha’s boss Abhimanyu (Bobby Deol) enters the fray as the third contender for her affections, things heat up a notch and the boys get down and dirty in sunny Miami!

Currently loving this song from Dostana.

Vishal – Shekar you are the bomb!

Backstage with Shamita VI

Day 4 Exhausted faces backstage, was all one could see on day 4, not only the models but even the behind the scenes crew members. By now we were expecting everyone’s catty claws out, but despite the occasional snapping the atmosphere was quite chilled. And the yummy chocolate ice cream that is available freely for all of us backstage also helped quite a bit. In fact did I mention this? Not just ice cream but loads of food and snacks are always around for us to munch on between shows. (it’s a different thing we don’t get the time!) There are also three other lounges available for those on a liquid diet. So in the gratification department we are all set!

Models Backstage

Models Backstage

The rest of the day went quite smoothly (almost mechanically) except for a few usual hiccups like for double designer shows where they fight over a common makeup look, due to which our make up process gets seriously delayed leaving us no time for rehearsals. Luckily we are professional enough to make the whole show look seamless and smooth even without the rehearsals.

The finale by Vikram Phadnis was definitely the highlight of day 4. True to the word ‘SHOWTIME’ it was worth a watch. With Shiamak Davar and his dancers performing, it definitely added to the already high glam quotient of the flamboyant creations of Vikram Phadnis. Priyanka Chopra was back again to do the finale walk. Wendell Rodricks sat in the front row and applauded the white gown Priyanka Chopra wore. He sat with Celina Jaitley and couldn’t stop complimenting the gown. So the show ended on a high note and we cant wait for tomorrow. It’s the last day!
