Some people have all the luck. I mean imagine flying to Macau to cover the IIFA Awards as part of your job! (I guess I shouldn’t complain my life is pretty awesome too but still. Macau!) So my Twitter buddy @ankitv (who describes himself as a mortal/non-chronological creature/TV presenter/dreamer/adrenaline junkie/wildlife enthusiast/amateur photographer/storyteller and is an anchor and correspondent for CNBC TV18) has very kindly let me hijack photos from his Facebook to share with you. Check it out!

P.S. Who wants to tell Aishwariya that she may have gone a tad overboard on the make up? And I lovelovelove Lara new haircut, she looks absolutely fab and pixie like. Must be love eh Dino?

Amitabh Bachchan – Living Icons

Earlier this evening I had one of those delightful Bollywood encounters you always hope to have in Mumbai. The one where you find yourself in the same room with India’s biggest superstar and can actually stare unabashedly at them to your hearts content! Roli Books launched an amazing amalgamation of essay’s titled “Icons” about the men and women who have (most recently) shaped India, edited by Anil Dharkar. The list is eclectic and intriguing (and I must admit I don’t actually know enough about the icons that my country is so proud of  which is why I plan to read the book.)

Pramod Kapoor, Anil Dharkar and Amitabh Bachchan

But there is no denying that the highlight of everyone’s experience was not only seeing Amitabh Bachchan in the flesh but also listening to him deliver an extraordinary speech (which he wrote himself!) In which he touched upon his experiences (stemming from humble disbelief at making the cut since he is for all intents and purposes “just an actor doing his job”), pondered over the intriguing definition of the word “Icon” itself, chastising the media for being unfair on occasion (which they clearly took well considering how they clambered for his attention regardless), eloquently described each of the other 19 on the list and ended up making a poignant comment on how far we’ve come and yet how frivolous all this list-making could seem and perhaps what we should be striving for is making more icons.

Tempted as I am I know I cannot hope to do justice to his delivery with snatches of what I remember, in fact I even considered taking video but felt perhaps that might have been a little invasive since he had been hesitant to share a copy of the speech at the launch in Delhi as well and requested everyone to take from it what they remembered. I’m hoping at some point he decides to post it on his blog.

You know, Anil Dharkar actually pointed out something obvious and yet somewhat of a revelation to me when he brought to our attention the fact that you could go to any corner of this country with a picture of Amitabh Bachchan and ask anyone who he was and everyone would know. Imagine the sheer magnitude of that?

I’ve come home today with a curious mixture of feelings. Perhaps if I share those that’ll be enough:

I feel Pride. For my country and “how far we’ve come” and that these are living icons and that means there will be more.
I feel Fear. For how my people will react on the day Amitabh Bachchan dies. (Morbid I know, but my mind wanders.)
I feel Anxiety. For how soon the next generation who never shared his lifetime will forget what he means to us. (Kind of like Raj Kapoor for my mother’s generation I suppose?)
I feel Confused. At how he said so many things so humbly and yet I don’t find it easy to attribute humility to him (perhaps just because of who he is.)
I feel Curious. For what his life is like outside the limelight and if he’s happy when he’s home.
But most of all I feel Happy that I just spent an evening listening to Amitabh Bhachan share his thoughts!

P.S. It was also a little wierd walking through the Trident lobby to the rooftop. I haven’t been inside (or outside) since 26/11 when on that fateful day I decided not to meet my friend in the lobby as planned and smoked a cigarette across the street instead. Isn’t it Ironic? Don’t you think?

Sachin Tendulkar gets Waxed!

sachin-tendulkar
Looks like our little master blaster Sachin Tendulkar is about to get his very own wax statue at Madame Tussaud’s on Monday, 13th April at 4.00 pm at Taj Lands End. (How’s this for two firsts; Sachin will be the first Indian sports personality to have his likeness built in wax and this is the first time a Madame Tussauds figure has ever been launched overseas.) His figure, which has taken three months to create, is in typical celebratory “on the pitch” pose dressed in his cricket whites which he himself donated.

Sachin’s wax figure will be placed next to other cricket legends like West Indian Brain Lara and Australian Shane Warne. Other Indian personalities to be portrayed at the museum include Bollywood superstars Shah Rukh Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai and Salman Khan.

The two Padma Shri recipients Akki and Ash will be seen together in Vipul Shah’s film “Action Replay.” Veteran actress and former queen of dance, Helen, was also awarded the Padma Shri for her contribution to art and cinema. Amitabh Bachchan himself is a candidate of Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan. His wife, Jaya Bachchan, is a candidate of Padma Shri, and father, Dr. Harivansh Rai Bacchan, was conferred with Padma Bhushan now I guess we’re just waiting on Abhishek Bachchan for a Bachchan clean sweep!

‘08 Bollywood Flashback: The Unforgettable Bachchans

July 18 2008: Amitabh Bachchan spent two months of his 67th year on a world tour with his family and entourage which turned out to be a multimillion-dollar show for everyone concerned.

Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan and his entourage hopped across Toronto, Trinidad, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Houston, Atlantic City, Chicago, New York & London and were paid about $700,000 per performance, while tickets worth over $1 million were sold in Chicago alone.

In fact the Big B. got a thunderous ovation when he made his entry and the entire audience rose to its feet every time he performed, staying on its feet on one occasion for more than 30 minutes as Bachchan danced to his songs and delivered dialogues from films like ‘Deewar’, ‘Agneepath’ and ‘Silsila’.

The show also featured Abhishek & Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Madhuri Dixit, Preity Zinta, Ritesh Deshmukh, Akshay Kumar, Shilpa Shetty, Shiamak Davar and his dancers and music directors Vishal and Shekha and Jaya Bachchan even appeared on the stage to make a plea for a campaign against  A combination of the Big B’s star power and the audience’s nostalgia appeared to have brought in the crowds.

Amitabh Bachchan (who went blogging-all-the-way) cited two unforgettable moments himself, “One, the audience at all our performances was incredible and second the press (in the US) has been very kind and generous.” This, he said, was in contrast to the ‘habitually negative press’ he received in India. Several newspapers in the US, including the Los Angeles Times and the Chicago Tribune, featured prominent articles on him.

And of course there’s a website.

11 October 2008: On a more serious note the Big B. was rushed to the hospital on his birthday this year. News of his hospitalisation on his birthday brought a huge crowd of fans and well-wishers to his Juhu residence and Bandra’s Lilavati Hospital. Bachchan has been busy with the shooting of Teen Patti, Alladdin and Johnny Mastana.
